Amherst, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts women?s tennis team will be playing this weekend at the Eastern Collegiate Championships from Sept. 17-19 in West Point, N.Y. The tournament will feature 15 schools, including Army, Fordham, Howard and Seton Hall, and will consist of both singles and doubles flights with championship and consolation rounds. UMass opened up the fall season last weekend at the SUnity Life Tennis Classic in Syracuse, N.Y. Sophomore Helena Horak (Westlake Village, Calif.) and freshman Katie Stammen (North Attleboro, Mass.) captured third place in Flight 2 doubles, while freshman Beth Ebert (Westford, Mass.) placed fourth in Flight 6 singles.
"I think we are one week better than we were last week," head coach Judy Dixon says. "Instead of going into this weekend as the underdog, I think we will be going into the tournament as one of the favorites. So now I expect the kids to step it up a pace. I think we like being one of the favorites. It is a role we handle well. Everybody seems to step up their game and their confidence really helps, too."
Senior Ola Gerasimova (Liatvia Ridge, Russia), sophomore Annie Hamilton (Plano, Texas), Horak and Stammen will all be competing in the singles portion of the tournament. The pair of senior Robyn Lebovitz (Marietta, Ga.) and Ebert and the duo of junior April Madani (Falmouth, Mass.) and freshman Lauren Perry (Pembroke, Mass.) will take part in doubles.
