STATESBORO, Ga. (AP) - Adrian Peterson ran for 332 yards and five touchdowns to lead Georgia Southern to a 38-21 victory over Massachusetts in the Division I-AA quarterfinals on Saturday.
Peterson, who had 32 carries, scored three of his touchdowns on 25-yard runs and also scored from 3 and 9 yards as the Eagles avenged last year's 55-43 loss to the Minutemen in the national championship game.
UMass (9-4) built a 14-10 lead less than three minutes into the third quarter on a 2-yard run by Marcel Shipp, his second 2-yard scoring run of the game.
Peterson then put the Eagles (11-2) ahead to stay with his first 25-yard scoring run with 10:34 left in the third.
The Eagles stretched the lead to 24-14 on Peterson's 9-yard run on the final play of the third period.
Massachusetts cut the lead to 24-21 early in the final period on an 8-yard pass from Todd Bankhead to Pete Cariello, but Peterson sealed the victory with his other two 25-yard scores at the 6:52 and 6:11 marks.
The victory lifted Georgia Southern to 22-0 at home in playoff action and 28-6 in their playoff history. Southern has won four national titles and finished second twice.
