Women's Swimming and Diving Defeats UNH 169-137

DURHAM, N.H. - The University of Massachusetts women?s swimming and diving team opened its 1999-2000 season with successful a start, earning a victory over New Hampshire this afternoon, 169-137.

Junior tri-captain Shannon Rowell (Hamburg, N.Y.) set a new personal best time of 2:08.97 in the 200y-backstroke, the fifth best time in UMass history, to win that event. The win completed a sweep of the backstroke events for Rowell, who matched a career best in the 100y-backstroke earlier in the day with a time of 1:00.21. Junior diver Robin Velona (Belmont, Mass.) swept both diving events, winning the one-meter with a personal best score of 242.85 (the fifth best score in school history). Sophomore Signe Dahlquist (Longmeadow, Mass.) finished second in the one-meter with a score of 203.625. Velona won the three-meter with a score of 234.225, another personal best and the ninth best score in school history. Freshman Kalyn Knopf (Taunton, Mass.) took second in her first collegiate meet with a score of 228.00, and Dahlquist completed the UMass sweep, finishing third with a score of 195.075.

UMass will return to action on Saturday, November 6, when they travel to New Britain, Conn., to take on Central Connecticut. The meet starts with diving at 10:30 a.m., with the swimming events to follow at around 1:00 p.m.
