DURHAM, N.H. - The University of Massachusetts men?s swimming and diving team its 1999-2000 season with a successful start, earning a victory over New Hampshire, 164-121 this afternoon.
Junior Chris Arsenault (Peabody, Mass.) earned two victories on the afternoon. Arsenault won both the 100y and 200y-backstroke events, winning in times of 53.69 and 1:54.42, respectively. Junior Billy Brown (Fullerton, Calif.) completed a sweep of the breaststroke events, winning the 100y in a time of 1:00.67, and the 200y in a time of 2:08.64. Senior Ed Hefferon (Stratford, Conn.) won the three-meter diving event with a score of 266.475. He also took second place in the one-meter, with a score of 234.225. Also posting wins on the afternoon were senior Billy Grimes (Leominster, Mass.), who won the 200y-butterfly in a time of 2:05.96, senior Henry Turner (Melrose, Mass), who won the 50y-free in a time of 22.35, and freshman Tommy Keane (Melrose, Mass.), who won the 500y-free in a time of 4:50.22.
UMass will return to action on Saturday, November 6, when they travel to New Britain, Conn., to take on Central Connecticut. The meet starts with diving at 10:30 a.m., with the swimming events to follow at around 1:00 p.m.
