Roe works closely with Director of Operations Tom Doherty and Video Operations Director Matthew Vogel in facilitation of the team's day-to-day activates on the road and at home in Amherst. Simultaneously, he serves as an academic coordinator within the program and creates a bridge between the coaching staff, current Minutemen, the UMass Athletics Academic Services Office and class professors.
In addition, during his third season with the program, Roe embraced a unique opportunity and served as an interim assistant coach during the campaign after Andy Allison was unable to travel while Allison recovered from a midseason surgery.
Over the course of a three-week stretch, Roe engaged himself in all aspects of coaching on and off the court. He compiled opponent scouting reports, planned practice materials and tutored the forwards and centers on his knowledge of the game gained through a nearly two-decade professional career and his standout four-year tenure with the Minutemen.
In addition to his operational duties and his recent coaching experiences, Roe includes civic involvement as a core philosophy of his work with the program, its student-athletes and the local and regional community.
Roe is paramount to the team's connection to the Western Massachusetts community that supports the program. Most recently, he organized visits to Springfield area children's hospitals, during which Minutemen spent visiting hours talking or playing with kids of all ages. He also coordinates the team's annual involvement in the Massachusetts Special Olympics Opening Ceremony, which is held on-campus, and he serves as the Camp Director for the Derek Kellogg Basketball School each summer. Roe maintains a strong relationship with the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in nearby Springfield as well and routinely appears at speaking engagements and youth clinics alongside the Minutemen.
A name synonymous with UMass basketball's history of success, Roe is one of the highest decorated competitors in program history. The Atlantic City, New Jersey, native scored 1,905 points during his Minuteman career, which currently ranks fourth all-time. A consensus all-America selection and the Atlantic 10 Player of the Year in 1995, Roe stands first with 1,070 rebounds and 578 free throws made as his name appears in the ledger for 10 different top-10 career categories at UMass. Along with Julius Erving, Roe is one of only two Minutemen to record at least 1,000 points and as many rebounds during his career.
Roe was selected by the Detroit Pistons in the second round of the 1995 NBA Draft and spent 17 years playing professionally in the NBA, CBA, Europe and Asia before returning to UMass. Since his return to Amherst, Roe completed his bachelor's degree in sports broadcasting while he simultaneously filled his role as the team's Assistant Director of Operations.
