Rory Pommerening joined the Massachusetts football staff as the team's Assistant Director of Athletics for Football Operations in January 2019. Pommerening oversees all aspects of the program's day-to-date logistics and coordinates the coaching staff's recruiting efforts as well.
Pommerening joined Massachusetts football following a recruiting assistantship with Alabama football. While with the Crimson Tide, Pommerening was responsible for a variety of recruiting-related responsibilities including the identification and evaluation of high school, junior college and graduate transfer prospects.
Prior to working at Alabama, Pommerening was a part of the Houston Texans' pro personnel staff. With the Texans, Pommerening aided in a variety of executive and administrative tasks related to the Reese's Senior Bowl, the NFL Combine, Texans Pro Day workouts and APT schools.
Pommerening earned his start in college football with the UNC football office, where he held increasingly important responsibilities as an undergraduate student (2007-08), operations assistant (2009-12), assistant director of player personnel (2012-13) and finally as the director of player personnel (20013-17).
In his final role as the director of player personnel, Pommerening coordinated Carolina's overall recruiting efforts. Pommerening arranged and managed on-campus recruiting visits and promoted and marketed the high school coaches clinic and summer camps.
Pommerening's recruiting oversight and efforts resulted in North Carolina signing six classes ranked in the top-25 nationally, including in 2010 (24th), 2011 (16th), 2013 (21st), 2014 (23rd), 2015 (24th) and 2016 (24th). UNC signed six future NFL Draft First Round selections during Pommerening's tenure assisting with the recruiting process, including Jonathan Cooper, Quinton Coples, Eric Ebron, Robert Quinn, Mitch Trubisky and Sylvester Williams.
While at UNC, Pommerening worked alongside multiple former UMass football coaches, including former head coach Walt Bell, and former assistant head coach, special teams coordinator and wide receivers coach Luke Paschall.
Pommerening, a native of Jensen Beach, Florida, earned a bachelor's degree in exercise and sport science from UNC in 2008.
