University of Massachusetts football and head coach Walt Bell welcomed Kyle Segler as the team’s tight ends coach on Wed., Feb. 24, 2021. Segler arrives following 12 years of coaching the offensive side of the game at four institutions, including 11 working with the tight ends position.
Segler coached All-Conference USA First Team honoree Xavier Gaines in 2020 as Gaines posted 28 catches, 404 receiving yards and four touchdowns during the 10-game season. The year culminated with a berth in the Camellia Bowl against Buffalo. The 2019 Marshall tight ends group – led by All-Conference USA honoree Armani Levias’ 46 receptions, 553 yards and three touchdowns – provided a pivotal offense spark as the Thundering Herd won eight games and appeared in the Gasparilla Bowl.
The Thundering Herd special teams unit flourished with Segler as its co-coordinator. In 2020, the team ranked No. 6 in the nation in kick return defense (16.00) while, individually, Sheldon Evans ranked among the top-50 return men in the country with 21.0 yards per kick return. One year earlier, the punt return unit posted a top-25 finish in yards per return (11.81), led by Talik Keaton’s 12.6 yards per punt return (No. 8 in the nation).
The College Station, Texas, native spent one year at the University of Louisiana at Monroe prior to his tenure at Marshall. While at ULM, Segler served as the Warhawks’ tight ends coach and special teams coordinator as the team qualified for bowl season in 2018.
While at ULM, Segler’s tight end corps provided steady output as Josh Pederson and Sloan Spiller combined for 26 receptions for 250 yards and three touchdowns during the year. Members of the special teams unit stood out as well, as ULM ranked No. 15 in the nation for kickoff return defense (17.68) and No. 18 in yards per punt return (13.29).
Prior to ULM, Segler spent eight seasons at his alma mater, Sam Houston State, where he coached the offensive line and tight ends, and served as the special teams coordinator for his final three seasons.
Sam Houston State compiled an 86-27 (.761) overall record between 2010-17, which included three Southland Conference Championships and seven NCAA FCS playoff appearances. The Bearkats won at least 11 games in six of those eight seasons, including each of the final four. The team ranked among the top-10 teams in the nation in 2012 (No. 2), 2013 (No. 2), 2014 (No. 6), 2015 (No. 3), 2016 (No. 5) and 2017 (No. 5).
The Bearkats emerged as a perennial contender for the NCAA FCS National Championship during Segler’s tenure. Sam Houston State appeared in the 2011 and 2012 FCS finale while it reached the semifinal round in 2014, 2015 and 2017. The program had previously reached the NCAA FCS Semifinal Round only once in team history.
Segler’s tenure at Sam Houston State culminated with one of the team’s five appearances in the FCS Final Four. During 2017, the Bearkats went 12-2 overall and 8-1 in the Southland Conference, advanced to the NCAA FCS Semifinal Round and ranked third and fourth in final FCS Coaches and STATS Polls, respectively.
With Segler’s help guiding the offensive line and the tight ends, the Sam Houston State offense led FCS in scoring offense (43.3 ppg), total offense (538.1 ypg) and passing offense (362.7 ypg) during 2017. Additionally, the special teams unit finished among the national leaders in blocked kicks (8; tied-second) and punt return average (14.9; sixth), including three punts returned for touchdowns.
In 2016, Sam Houston led the FCS in total offense (547.3 ypg.) and scoring offense (49.5 ppg.) while finishing second in passing offense (368.3 ypg.) and fourth in passing efficiency (165.7 rating). The Kats also led the Southland in kickoff coverage (43.4 net avg.) and ranked second in both kickoff returns (23.2 avg.) and punting (38.1 net avg.). Joseph Figenshaw was named first-team All-Southland after leading the league in punting average at 44.2 while Jaylen Harris earned second-team all-conference honors after producing a school single-season record 1,020 kickoff return yards.
In 2015, the Bearkats led the FCS in total offense (531.7 ypg.) and ranked among the nation's Top 10 in scoring offense (fifth at 41.1 ppg.) and rushing offense (254.5 ypg.). Sam Houston set the Southland single-season record with 7,975 yards total offense – the third-highest single-season total in FCS history.
At Sam Houston State, Segler helped developed four all-Americas who combined for five selections overall: Chris Crockett (2011), Travis Watson (2011), Kaleb Hopson (2012) and Donald Jackson III (2014, ‘15). He tutored seven first-team All-Southland choices as well, including Crockett (2011), Watson (2011), Hopson (2012), tight end T.J. Jones (2012) and Jackson (2013, ’14, ‘15). In 2015, Jackson also was selected Southland Offensive Tackle of the Year.
Prior to returning to his alma mater, he spent the 2009 season coaching at Lon Morris College in Jacksonville, Texas, and helped relaunch a football program that was discontinued in 1945.
In recognition of his impact as a coach, Segler earned selection to the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) 35 Under 35 Leadership Institute beginning in 2018. The program’s goal is to identify and develop leaders for the sport at the scholastic and collegiate levels.
Segler was an offensive lineman on Sam Houston State’s team that won a share of the Southland regular season title, advanced to the NCAA FCS semifinals and finished 11-3. He earned two degrees from Sam Houston State, receiving his bachelor's in kinesiology in 2006 and his Master's in sports management in 2010.
Segler and his wife Ashley, who played softball for Sam Houston State, have two daughters: Landry and Leighton.
