Former University of Massachusetts captain Shauna Rankin-Byrne returned to her alma mater as volunteer assistant coach prior to the 2018 season. A native of Lebanon, New Hampshire who donned the Maroon and White from 2013-17, Rankin-Byrne was a standout on defense during her playing days. In her current role with the program, Rankin-Byrne assists with all daily facets of the program, including practice and game preparation, film breakdown and travel.

“We are thrilled that Shauna has decided to begin her collegiate coaching career here at her alma mater,” said head coach Barb Weinberg. “In combining her hockey background and familiarity with UMass, I have no doubt that Shauna will help us on a number of fronts and push our team toward the goal of playing in the NCAA Tournament. She is a fierce competitor and we are excited to have her on our staff this season.”

During Rankin-Byrne’s career with Massachusetts, the Maroon and White three times reached the NCAA Tournament (2013, 2015, 2016) by way of capturing the Atlantic 10 Championship each of those seasons. In her career she appeared in 81 games, starting 58 contests including all 21 in the 2017 season. She recorded 17 points via seven goals and three assists, while also serving as a key contributor to the penalty corner unit throughout her career.
