    Volunteer Assistant Coach
University of Massachusetts head field hockey coach Barb Weinberg announced the addition of former Michigan State midfielder Kristin Matula as a volunteer assistant coach prior to the 2017 season.

An Academic All-Big Ten honoree, Matula appeared in 80 total games at Michigan State from 2013-16, captaining the Spartans during her senior campaign in 2016. She amassed 54 points during her career on 21 goals and 12 assists, helping the squad to a postseason Big Ten Championship in 2013.

In MSU’s subsequent NCAA Tournament appearance, Matula scored the game-winning goal in a First Round upset of No. 2 Syracuse. That set up the Spartans for a meeting with eventual NCAA Champion Connecticut, which was backstopped in the cage by Matula’s fellow assistant coach, Sarah Mansfield.

She logged 41 points during her final two seasons in East Lansing and was among the team’s top three scorers each of those years.

A native of Louisville, Kentucky, Matula earned her undergraduate degree from Michigan State in kinesiology in May 2017. She is currently pursuing a master’s in sport management in UMass’ Isenberg School of Management.
