Eight Named to A-10 Academic Teams

Dec. 31, 2001

Amherst, Mass. -- A league-high eight University of Massachusetts student-athletes from its six fall athletic teams have been selected to the fall Atlantic 10 academic all-conference teams.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must have a grade point average of at least a 3.00 and be a starter or key reserve on his/her team. Voting is conducted by the A-10's sports information directors and the number of players selected to a team reflects the standard-sized team in that sport. Duquesne, St. Joseph's, Dayton and Rhode Island all had seven student-athletes on the six teams.

The A-10 champion UMass field hockey team produced a pair of honorees in seniors Lindsay Abbott (Northampton, Mass.) and Anke Bruemmer (Koeln, Germany). Bruemmer, a first team All-American and the 2001 Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year, earned field hockey's Student-Athlete of the Year award and owns a 3.00 gpa in sport management. Abbott carries a 3.38 gpa in marketing.

The UMass men's soccer team, which advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time ever after winning the A-10 Tournament, placed a pair of student-athletes on the honor squad in seniors Bryan O'Quinn (Feeding Hills, Mass.) and J.R. Pouncey (Houston, Texas). O'Quinn owns a 3.69 gpa in sport management, while Pouncey has a 3.20 mark in sport management.

The league's academic women's soccer team featured a pair of Minutewomen in senior Katelyn Jones (Round Lake, N.Y.) and sophomore Michelle Luttati (Westford, Mass.). Jones has a 3.40 gpa as a BDIC major, while Luttati carries a 3.83 in communications.

The UMass women's cross country team had one selection in senior Kristin Cisowski (Salem, N.H.). A two-time NCAA qualifier, Cisowski owns a 3.53 gpa in civil engineering. The eighth UMass honoree was senior volleyball standout Janeen DeMarte (El Paso, Texas), who has a 3.52 gpa in psychology.
