SWIMMING AND DIVING
*The men's swimming and diving team defeated Syracuse, 239-127, in a two-day meet on Friday, Dec. 1, and Saturday, Dec. 2, at Joseph R. Rogers, Jr. Pool. UMass is now 4-2 in dual-meet competition on the season.

*Senior Chris Arsenault (Peabody, Mass.) set pool records in the 200 IM (1:52.25) and the 100 free (45.53). He was a member of the school-record setting 200 medley relay team with a time of 1:32.94, previously set in the 1997-98 season with a time of 1:33.40. Arsenault was also a member of the pool record setting 200 free, 400 medley and 800 free relay teams over teh weekend. Arsenault's time of 49.02 in the 100 fly is currently the seventh fastest time in Division I.

*Sophomore Tommy Keane (Melrose, Mass.) set pool records in the 1650 free (16:03.22) and the 500 free (4:36.02), while Senior Billy Brown (Fullerton, Calif.) set a pool record in the 400 IM with a time of 4:02.92.

*Freshman Logan Alomar (Silver Spring, Md.) won the 11 dive three-meter event with a score of 503.55, which is good for second all-time at UMass behind Ed Hefferon's score of 506.90 in the 1997-98 season. Alomar's score is good enough to put him in the NCAA Zone Qualifier.

*The Minutemen return to the pool on Saturday, Dec. 9, when they travel to UConn to take on the Huskies at 3:00 p.m.

*The women's swimming and diving team fell to Syracuse by a score of 240-130 in a two-day meet at Joseph R. Rogers, Jr. Pool, on Friday, Dec. 1, and Saturday, Dec. 2. UMass is now 4-2 in dual-meet competition on the season.

*Sophomore Kate Allery (South Hadley, Mass.) set a UMass record in the 10 dive one-meter event with a score of 424.50. Allery placed second in the event behind Syracuse's Julie Van Deusen's score of 428.03. The record was previously held by Angelique Rodriguez who set it in the 1996-97 season with a score of 422.05. Allery's score is good enough to put her in the NCAA Zone Qualifier.

*Freshman Christen Dexter (Centerville, Mass.) set a school-record in the 200 breast with a time of 2:22.20. Junior Anne Dettloff (Barrington, Ill.) won the 1650 free in a pool record time of 17:30.00, while the 400 free relay team of junior Becky Hunnewell (Sandwich, Mass.), junior Andrea Kazanjian (Troy, N.Y.), sophomore Lauren Bulkeley (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Dettloff set a pool record with a time of 3:35.51.

*The Minutewomen return to the pool on Saturday, Dec. 9, when they travel to UConn to take on the Huskies at 12:00 p.m.

MEN'S GYMNASTICS
*The University of Massachusetts men's gymnastics team finished first at the 10th annual UMass Men's Gymnastics Open Saturday, Dec. 2, night at Curry Hicks Cage. The Minutemen, who finished with 202.9 points, finished atop Temple (197.45), Army (192.3), Springfield College (187.15), Vermont (162.8), MIT (149.25) and Southern Connecticut State (126.7).

*UMass' Andy Leis (Suffield, Conn.) won the all-around (50.00), finishing third on the pommel horse (8.45) and parallel bars (8.05). Teammate Darren Morace (Westfield, Mass.) (49.7) finished a close second to Leis in the all-around followed by Joshua Chassee (47.55) of Springfield College.

*Minuteman Matt Plumser (East Brunswick, N.J.) placed first on the pommel horse (8.6) followed by teammates Justin Hammar (Woodbury, Minn.) (8.5), Leis (8.45), and Patrick McFarlin (Longmeadow, Mass.) (8.4). In the floor exercise, Eric Bacon (Belchertown, Mass.) (8.8) finished second to Army's John Robella (9.0).

*Temple's Alex Weber (8.85) finished first on the horizontal bars followed by Morace (8.6) and Weber's teammate Richard Maguire (8.55). On the parallel bars, Temple's Travis Kitchen (8.35) placed first followed by UMass' Ben Jacobs (Milwaukee, Wis.), Leis (8.05) and Plumser (8.05).

*UMass is off until after the new year when it hosts Penn State on January 13 in Boyden Gymnasium at 7:00 p.m.

INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
*The University of Massachusetts men's and women's track and field teams started the indoor season off with a second and third place finish Saturday afternoon at Boston University.

*The men's team was lead by senior Marc Sylvander (Chicopee, Mass.) as they finished in third place with 82 points behind New Hampshire, 97, and Boston University, 90. Sylvander won the 400 meter dash with a time of 49.49, with teammates Hugh Reid (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finishing fourth at 50.76 and Mike Howell finishing sixth at 51.97.

*The Minutemen went one and two in the shot put with Jeff Jason edging Eric Uliano (Haverhill, Mass.) with a toss of 48'1.25" to Uliano's 48'.0.50"

*Anthony Ortega won the long jump with a jump of 21'11.75".

*The women's team finished second with 123 points behind Central Connecticut State, 145.

*Carole LaPlante (Gardiner, Maine) won the shot put with toss of 38'7.50". Megan McCormick (State College, Pa) finished second in the mile run with a time of 5:00.91, while Katherine Blais (Andover, Mass.) finished fifth at 5:25.65.

*The women return to action next weekend, Saturday, Dec. 8, at the Rhode Island Pentathlon.
