Defending Champs Take Early A-10 Commissioner's Cup Lead

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Defending Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Cup champion Massachusetts has taken the early lead in the race for the 2001-02 award.
Massachusetts ended the fall season with 46 points, three better than second place Dayton and four better than third place Rhode Island. UMass earned one regular season championship in the fall, that being its sixth-straight field hockey title. Massachusetts also had third-place showings in men's cross country and men's soccer.
Dayton parlayed its women's soccer and volleyball regular season championships into a second-place standing. The Flyers also placed second in men's soccer. As for Rhode Island, the Rams won their third straight men's soccer regular season title and placed second in women's cross country.
La Salle, which won both men's and women's cross country championships and finished second in women's soccer, is in fourth place with 39.5 points. Atlantic 10 newcomer Richmond is in fifth place with 36 points, while Saint Joseph's and Xavier are tied for sixth with 31 points. George Washington (26 points), Duquesne (24.5 points), Fordham (19 points), Temple (13 points), and St. Bonaventure (4 points) round out the field.
Points are awarded in descending order of finish, equal to the number of teams which participate in each sport. Regular season standings are used in round-robin sports: baseball, men's and women's basketball, field hockey, women's lacrosse, men's and women's soccer, softball, and women's volleyball.
