FIELD HOCKEY
*The Minutewomen advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season. UMass defeated Boston University, 2-1, in the first round, before losing to host North Carolina, 5-1, in the quarterfinals.

*Senior tri-captain Kristen Schmidt (Greenfield, Mass.) scored with just over five minutes remaining in the second half to give the Minutewomen a 2-1 victory over Boston University in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The goal came on a penalty corner with seniors Patty Robinson (Norwood, Mass.) and Lucy Koch (Ipswich, Mass.) getting the assists. Junior Lindsay Abbott (Northampton, Mass.) scored the first UMass goal of the game.

*Senior goaltender Zowie Tucker (Neath, South Wales) made 14 saves in the quarterfinal loss to North Carolina. It was her second highest save total of the season. She entered the NCAA Tournament leading the nation in goals against average (0.54) and save percentage (.897).

*Patty Robinson tied the UMass all-time career assists record with 50. She recorded the record-tying assist in the Minutewomen's 5-1 loss to North Carolina. Robinson finished the season with 18 assists. Robinson was the primary stopper on the penalty corner unit for the past three seasons. Robinson joins Jenn Salisbury atop the UMass career assists list. Her 18 assists this year ties her for fourth on the all-time single-season UMass assist list, tying her total from last season.

*The Minutewomen have now appeared in 18 of the 20 NCAA Field Hockey Tournaments. They also have 25 winning seasons in 26 years of competition.

*Kristen Schmidt finished the season as the team leader in goals (14) and points (28). Junior Anke Bruemmer (Koeln, Germany) finished second with 12 goals and 26 points.

VOLLEYBALL
*Volleyball concluded its season with two conference wins in Philadelphia over the weekend to finish at 14-13 overall and 10-6 in the Atlantic-10. On Friday, the Minutewomen swept La Salle, 3-0 (15-8, 15-0, 15-5). On Saturday, UMass defeated rival Temple in a marathon match, 3-2 (2-15, 15-12, 12-15, 16-14, 15-12).

*Senior Rebecca Hasson (Riverside, Calif.) closed out her career with 28 kills and 17 digs in the two matches. Classmate Jenni Drennan (Long Beach, Calif.) dished out 96 assists in the two matches giving her 2,594 for her career and placing her first all-time at UMass in assists. Junior Lymarie Llovet (Arecibo, Puerto Rico) who led the Minutewomen with 10 double-doubles this season, tallied a career-high 26 kills against Temple.

MEN'S WATER POLO
*UMass returns to action, Saturday, Nov. 18, at the CWPA Eastern Championship, held in Providence, R.I. at Brown University. The Minutemen will take on Bucknell at 1:30 p.m. The winnner of the Championship gains an automatic bid into the NCAA Championship, held in Malibu, Calif.

*If the Minutemen win Saturday afternoon, they would take on the winner of the Harvard/Navy match, Saturday, at 8:30 p.m.

*The Championship match for Easterns will be held Sunday, Nov. 19, at 12:00 p.m.

*Junior Carlos Ramos (Anasco, Puerto Rico) leads the team with 93 points. Ramos also leads the team with 59 goals, 34 assists, and 49 steals.

*UMass has defeated eight top-20 teams this season.

MEN'S TENNIS
*The University of Massachusetts men's tennis team concluded the fall portion of its' schedule last weekend at the ITA East Regional Championships in Blacksburg, Va. Junior Steve Prisco (Dedham, Mass.) was the only player to advance to the second round, but was knocked out by the tournament's No. 1 seed Mike Halperin of Cornell.

*The doubles team of Brent Davis (San Diego, Calif.) and Prisco lost in the first round to Zafar Fisher and Chris McGrath of Navy, 8-5.

*UMass will resume action this spring when they participate in the Cornell Invitational, Feb. 9-11.

WOMEN'S TENNIS
*At the ITA East Region Championship last weekend on the campus of William and Mary, the freshman doubles tandem of Jafra Depontes (Kaliua-Kona, Hawaii) and Francesca Mancini (Milan, Italy) advanced to Monday's quarterfinal with an 8-3 win over the No. 9 seed Broughton and Magvera from Harvard.

*Depontes and Mancini are now 9-0 together overall this season and will meet the No. 5 seed from James Madison Monday night.

*In singles action, No. 17 Mancini lost her first match of the season to Hampton's Alena Mitackova in the round of 32.

CROSS COUNTRY
*The UMass women's cross country team placed ninth and the men's team took 18th place at the NCAA Northeast Regional at Van Cortlandt Park in Broklyn, N.Y., on Nov. 11th.

*Leading the way for the Minutewomen was junior Kristin Cisowski (Salem, N.H.), who took 16th place overall with a time of 21:11. Senior Melissa Henderson (Abington, Mass.) finished next, placing 44th at 21:58. The next three UMass finishers were senior Megan McCormick (State College, Pa.), freshman Molly Ketschek (Wilbraham, Mass.) and junior Katherine Blais (Andover, Mass.) as they placed 59th, 64th and 116th, respectively. *Boston College (47) won the 33-team women's race and was followed by Yale (56) and Brown (87). The Minutewomen finished with a team score of 299. *For the Minutemen, senior Michael Pieck (Guilderland, N.Y.) led the way by finishing 44th overall with a time of 32:40. Junior Sal Nastasi (Merrich, N.Y.) followed at 100th with 33:42. Senior Kevin Somers (Monson, Mass.) was right behind at 102nd, logging a time of 33:45. Next for UMass were senior Brendan Sullivan (New City, N.Y.) and junior Ryan Corbett (Highland, N.Y.), who took 120th and 123rd, respectively, at 34:10 and 34:12.

*Providence (27) won the 32-team men's race and was followed by Iona (75) and Dartmouth (104). The Minutemen finished with a team score of 489.

*This race concludes the season for both the men's and women's cross country teams.

MEN'S SWIMMING
* Senior Chris Arsenault (Peabody, Mass.) and sophomore Ryan Zaucha (Auburn, Calif.) each won three events as the men's swimming and diving team defeated Boston University, 173-121, Saturday afternoon. UMass won 10 out of the 16 events and improved to 3-0 on the season.

*Arsenault won the 200 fly (1:54.31), the 100 free (46.87) and the 100 fly (51.46), while Zaucha won the 100 (53.54), 200 back (1:59.77) and the 200 IM (2:02.48). Other UMass winners include, senior Mike Sabina (Avon, Mass.) in the 100 breast (58.82), freshman Ryan Fisher (Ventura, Calif.) in the 50 free (22.06) and Billy Brown (Fullerton, Calif.) in the 200 breast (2:10.13). Freshman diver Logan Alomar (Silver Spring, Md.) placed first in the three-meter diving event with a score of 297.30.

WOMEN'S SWIMMING
*The women's swimming and diving team went 2-0 on the week with a 165-132 win over Boston University on Saturday, Nov. 11, and a 156 -144 win over Northeastern at Joseph R. Rogers, Jr. Pool, on Sunday, Nov. 12. UMass is now 4-0 on the season.

*In the win at Boston University, junior Andrea Kazanjian (Troy, N.Y.) won the 50 (24.83) and the 100 free (54.16), while freshman Christen Dexter (Centerville, Mass.) won the 100 (1:08.32) and 200 breast (2:25.78). Other UMass winners were sophomore Catherine Getty (Wayne, N.J.) in the 1000 free (11:02.66), freshman Lauren Rowell (Hamburg, N.Y.) in the 100 back (1:00.84), junior Becky Hunnewell (Sandwich, Mass.) in the 200 back (2:07.35) and junior Anne Dettloff (Barrington, Ill.) in the 500 free (5:13.42). The 200 medley relay team of Lauren Rowell, Dexter, freshman Diana Alberti (Wantagh, N.Y.) and Kazanjian finished first with a time of 1:51.58.

*In the win over Northeastern, Dettloff, Dexter and Hunnewell each won two events. Dettloff won the 500 (5:06.48) and the 1000 free (10:38.72), Dexter won the 100 (1:07.53) and the 200 breast (2:25.42), and Hunnewell won the 200 back (2:07.98) and the 200 IM (2:10.99). Other UMass winners included Lauren Rowell in the 100 back (1:00.37), sophomore Molly Buckley (Taunton, Mass.) in the 50 free (24.54) and Kazanjian in the 100 free (53.58). The 200 medley relay team of Lauren Rowell, Dexter, Kazanjian and sophomore Lizzy Boyle (Darien, Conn.) finished first with a time of 1:49.94.

* Both the men and the women return to the pool on Saturday, Nov. 18, when they travel to Jamaica, N.Y., to take on St. John's at 1:00 p.m.
