Three Athletes Receive Atlantic 10 Conference Weekly Honors

AMHERST, Mass. -- Three University of Massachusetts athletes received Atlantic 10 Conference weekly honors for their performances this past week. Junior women's soccer player Martha Conover (Liverpool, N.Y.) and junior field hockey player Anke Bruemmer (Koeln, Germany) were named Players of the Week, while freshman men's soccer player Obie Gravely (Richmond, Va.) received Rookie of the Week accolades.

Conover scored a goal in each of UMass wins last weekend including, the game-winner versus La Salle, to help the Minutewomen clinch the third seed in the Atlantic 10 Championship taking place this weekend, Nov. 3 & 5, in Cincinnati. Conover scored on a direct kick against Fordham Friday and on a corner kick versus La Salle Sunday. Entering the week, Conover is tied for sixth on the team in scoring with a career-high three goals and nine points.

Bruemmer registered eight points in helping UMass to a 3-0 record and the regular season A-10 championship last week. Against Dartmouth on Tuesday, the senior back tallied both goals in the Minutewomen's 2-1 overtime victory. She then tallied one goal in the eighth-ranked Minutewomen's 2-0 win over West Chester Friday and 4-0 shutout of La Salle on Sunday. She leads UMass with 11 goals and is second in the Atlantic 10 with a team-high 24 points.

Gravely scored two goals in the 3-0 win over Fordham, on Friday, Oct. 27. He now has four goals on the season. The team went 2-0 this past week to earn a share of the Atlantic 10 Championship. UMass defeated Fordham, 3-0 on Friday, Oct. 27, and downed La Salle, 2-1, on Oct. 29. The Minutemen are 12-5-2 and 8-1-1 in the A-10 and share the regular season title with Dayton which tied George Washington 2-2, to also finish with a 8-1-1 record. UMass will be the No. 2 seed in the four-team Atlantic 10 Tournament at Kingston, R.I., on Nov. 3-5, and will take on tournament host Rhode Island (13-5-1, 8-2-0 A-10) at 7:30 p.m., while Dayton will face No. 4 seed George Washington (9-5-3, 6-3-1 A-10) at 5:30 p.m. The championship game will be held on Sunday, Nov. 5, at 2:00 p.m. The Minutemen defeated Rhode Island, 1-0, in overtime earlier this season.
