Field Hockey
*The Minutewomen went 3-0 on the week defeating Dartmouth, 2-1 in overtime, West Chester, 2-0, and La Salle, 4-0. UMass finished the A-10 season with a perfect record of 5-0 for the second straight year. The Minutewomen will be the number one seed this weekend, Nov 4-5, when they host the A-10 Championship.
*UMass will begin defense of its A-10 title on Saturday, Nov. 4, at 1:00 p.m. when it hosts West Chester at Garber Field. Under head coach Patty Shea, the Minutewomen are 6-0 in A-10 tournament play and have won eight straight in the event since a 3-2 loss to Rhode Island, Nov. 4, 1995. The second game of the semifinals will feature No. 2 seed Temple against No. 3 seed Rhode Island at 3:00 p.m. Saturday's winners will meet for the title on Sunday, Nov. 5, at 1:00 p.m.
*Junior Anke Bruemmer (Koeln, Germany) scored four goals on the week, with two coming in the 2-1 overtime win against Dartmouth. Bruemmer now has 11 goals on the year and 39 for her career.
*Senior goaltender Zowie Tucker (Neath, South Wales) recorded her eighth and ninth shutouts of the year in the wins against West Chester and La Salle. Tucker now as a goals against average of 0.64 on the year.
Men's Soccer
*The men's soccer team went 2-0 this past week to earn a share of the Atlantic 10 Championship. UMass defeated Fordham, 3-0, on Friday, Oct. 27, and downed La Salle, 2-1, on Oct. 29. The Minutemen are 12-5-2 and 8-1-1 in the A-10 and share the regular season title with Dayton which tied George Washington, 2-2, to also finish with a 8-1-1 record.
*This is UMass' first Atlantic 10 regular season title since winning it for the first time in 1994. UMass will be the No. 2 seed in the four-team Atlantic 10 Tournament at Kingston, R.I., on Nov. 3-5, by virtue of falling to the Flyers, 3-1, on Oct. 20. On Friday, UMass will take on tournament host Rhode Island (13-5-1, 8-2-0 A 10) at 7:30 p.m., while Dayton will face No. 4 seed George Washington (9-5-3, 6-3-1 A-10) at 5:30 p.m. The championship game will be held on Sunday, Nov. 5, at 2:00 p.m. The Minutemen defeated Rhode Island, 1-0, in overtime earlier this season.
*Sophomore forward Jeff Deren (Chicopee, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal with 21 seconds left in regulation to give UMass the win over La Salle. After a scoreless first half, La Salle's Nick Zegestowsky scored at the 64:19 mark off an assist from John Topper. UMass answered back at the 79:21 mark when senior Seth Lilburn (Boonton Township, N.J.) scored with an assist by sophomore John Lytton (Madison, Miss.) to tie the game. Deren's game-winner was shot into the left corner of the net off Lytton's second assist of the game. Junior goalie Bryan O'Quinn (Feeding Hills, Mass.) made two saves for UMass.
*Freshman Obie Gravely (Richmond, Va.) scored two goals in the win over Fordham. O'Quinn recorded his seventh shutout of the season bringing him one shy of tying the UMass single-season shutout record of eight. Junior Fred Kinateder (Waukesha, Wis.) gave UMass the early lead when he scored from an assist by sophomore Derek Rhodes (DePere, Wis.) at the 2:09 mark. Gravely scored his first goal of the game off an assist by freshman Ptah Myers (Columbus, Ohio) at the 75:53 mark as the goalie came out of the net to the right and Gravely shot it into the left side of the net. Gravely scored exactly two minutes later when he scored on a chip shot from 10 yards out with an assist by freshman Matt Laughlin (Selah, Wash.).
Women's Soccer
*UMass went 2-0 last weekend with 2-1 wins over Fordham and LaSalle to improve to 11-6-1/7-2-1 Atlantic 10 Conference. Next up for the Minutewomen is the A-10 Tournament hosted by Xavier in Cincinnati, Ohio. Third seeded UMass will play second seeded Xavier at 8:00 p.m. Friday. The winner will advance to the Championship game, Sunday, Nov. 5, at 2:00 p.m.
Senior forward Brooke Bartlett (Clifton Park, N.Y.) scored as UMass beat Fordham, 2-1, Friday afternoon at Totman Field. With the win, UMass qualifie's for the A-10 Tournament. UMass junior midfielder Martha Conover (Liverpool, N.Y.) put UMass up 1-0, scoring off a direct kick at 31:00. Bartlett gave the Minutewomen a 2-0 lead at 68:46, scoring from Kara Green (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and Kat Machamer (Highland Ranch, Colo.). The Rams' Kirstin Gellatly scored with 1:53 left to deny freshman keeper Kelly Nigh's (Seattle, Wash.) shutout bid. Nigh made four saves in the game while Fordham's Shannon Misiaszek made six.
*Conover scored, unassisted, off a corner kick with 9:54 left in the game to give UMass a 2-1 win over La Salle Sunday afternoon at Totman Field. Freshman forward Erin Lilly (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) got UMass on the board first, scoring at 44:14 from Bartlett and freshman midfielder Amy Mink (West Chester, Ohio). UMass held on to the lead until the 65:15 mark when La Salle's Dana Gavaghan scored off a pass from Blair Hontz. Junior goalkeeper Julie Podhrasky (Dallas, Texas) made four saves for the Minutewomen who outshot the Explorers 14-6. La Salle keeper, Kaitlin Glass, made six saves, including one on Bartlett on a penalty kick.
*Kara Green's assist last weekend gives her 111 career points. She is currently second among UMass' all-time point scorers, 13 points behind Emma Kurowski and her 124 career points scored between 1996 to 1999.
Volleyball
*Volleyball posted a 2-1 record last week as they continue to vie for a playoff spot in the four-team Atlantic-10 tournament. On Wednesday, the Minutewomen beat Rhode Island on the road, 3-1, (15-0, 12-15, 15-9, 15-12). On Friday, the team returned to the Cage and swept Fordham, 3-0 (15-7, 15-12, 15-8), but fell the next night to George Washington, 3-0 (15-13, 15-8, 15-2).
*Freshman Lindsay Bailey (North Vancouver, British Columbia) posted a career-high 17 kills in only 28 attacks for an impressive .500 hitting percentage versus Rhode Island. In the same match, junior Lymarie Llovet (Arecibo, Puerto Rico) recorded her team-leading eighth double-double of the season with 19 kills and 14 digs. Senior setter Jenni Drennan (Long Beach, Calif.) averaged 45 assists and eight digs in the three matches.
*UMass will only play one match this week, as they travel to Duquesne on Nov. 3 for a 7:00 start. The Minutewomen return home to Curry Hicks Cage for their last home match of the season versus Fairfield on Nov. 7.
Men's Water Polo
*The Minutemen (20-10, 8-2 CWPA) captured third place in the ECAC Championship going 2-2 last week with victories over Navy, 11-8, and Queens, 12-6.
*Junior Mike Foley (Tustin, Calif.) scored nine goals last weekend including five against Navy.
*Junior Adam Moore (Sinking Spring, Pa.) scored seven goals last weekend and leads the team with 50 for the season. Moore also has 15 blocks for his career, which places him third all-time in school history.
*The Minutemen have beaten eight top-twenty teams this season.
*UMass returns to action this weekend at the CWPA North Division Playoffs, held in Cambridge, Mass.
Men's Tennis
*The men's tennis team suffered their first defeat of the season last Saturday at the hands of UConn. They now stand at 6-1 on the season. Freshman Brent Davis (San Diego, Calif.) won his match against the Huskies to improve his record to 12-1 overall.
*The doubles tandem of Steve Prisco (Dedham, Mass.) and Davis continue to tear up the court as they now stand at 13-2 overall, 6-0 in dual matches.
*The Minutemen will wrap up the fall season when they travel to Virgina Tech for the ITA Regional Championship, Nov. 7.
Women's Tennis
*The women's tennis team won their match at UConn last Saturday earning UMass a split with its regional rival. Freshman Francesca Mancini (Milan, Italy) won again and remains undefeated on the season.
*Mancini also teamed up with Jafra Depontes on the doubles court to beat the Huskies and improve their overall record to 6-0.
*The Minutewomen will conclude their season this weekend as well, when they travel to William and Mary for their regional championship.
Cross Country
*The UMass women's cross country team placed second and the men's team took fourth place at the Atlantic 10 Championship held last weekend at Duquesne University's Schenley Park. With their second place finish, the Minutewomen ended their streak of five straight A-10 titles.
*Leading the way for the Minutewomen was junior Kristin Cisowski (Salem, N.H.), who took second place overall with a time of 17:44. Senior Melissa Henderson (Abington, Mass.) was close behind, placing fourth at 17:55. The next three UMass finisher's were senior Megan McCormick (State College, Pa.), junior Katherine Blais (Andover, Mass.), and freshman Molly Ketschek (Wilbraham, Mass.) as they placed 20th, 21st and 27th respectively.
*St. Joseph's (55) won the 10-team women's race and was followed by UMass (74), LaSalle (82), Duquesne (91) and Rhode Island (92).
*For the Minutemen, senior Mike Pieck (Guilderland, N.Y.) led the way by finishing 11th overall with a time of 26:08. Junior Kevin Curtin (Chelmsford, Mass.) followed at 14th, logging a time of 26:17. Next for UMass were junior Ryan Corbett (Highland, N.Y.) and senior Brendan Sullivan (New City, N.Y.) who took 20th and 21st respectively, both finishing at 26:24. Senior Kevin Somers (Monson, Mass.) finished 23rd with a time of 26:28.
*St. Joseph's won the 10-team men's race (27), and was followed by LaSalle (44), Duquesne (75), UMass (89) and Rhode Island (155).
Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving
*After a week off, the UMass men's and women's swimming and diving teams return to action this weekend, Nov. 4, with a dual meet against Central Connecticut State. The meet starts at 1:00 p.m. at the Boyden swimming pool.
