Composite Schedule

Field Hockey

*The Minutewomen won their only game of the week defeating Rhode Island, 1-0, in overtime.

*Junior Lindsay Abbott (Northampton, Mass.) scored just minutes into the extra period to give UMass the win. The goal was Abbott's sixth of the year.

*Senior goaltender Zowie Tucker (Neath, South Wales) made three saves en route to her seventh shutout of the year.

*The Minutewomen return to action Tuesday, Oct. 24, at 3:00 p.m. as they travel to take on Dartmouth.

Men's Soccer

*The men's soccer team went 2-1 last week in Atlantic 10 play. The Minutemen defeated No. 19 Rhode Island, 1-0, in overtime, on Oct. 18, fell to Dayton, 3-1, on Oct. 20 and defeated Xavier 1-0, on Oct. 22. UMass is now 10-5-2 overall and 6-1-1 in the Atlantic 10. UMass is in second place in the Atlantic 10 with two games to play. The top four teams make the Atlantic 10 Tournament on Nov. 3-5, in Kingston, R.I.

*Senior Seth Lilburn (Boonton Township, N.J.) scored the game-winning goal, 4:58 into sudden-victory overtime, to give UMass the 1-0 win over No. 19 Rhode Island at the URI Soccer Complex. The win snapped Rhode Island's 18-match home winning streak. The two teams ended regulation with a scoreless tie after UMass junior goalie Bryan O'Quinn (Feeding Hills, Mass.) made 11 saves. Sophomore Andrew Eicher (Billerica, Mass.) collected a loose ball in the middle of the field and passed it to Lilburn who scored the game-winning goal at the 94:58 mark.

*Junior sweeper J.R. Pouncey (Houston, Texas) scored UMass' only goal of the game in the 3-1 loss to Dayton. O'Quinn made a total of three saves in the loss.

* Senior Matt Christy (Paxton, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal at the 76:48 mark in the 1-0 win over Xavier, at Totman Field. Christy scored off a corner kick from senior Benny Hoffman (Allentown, Pa.) to give UMass the win. The Minutemen outshot the Musketeers, 13-8. O'Quinn made four saves to earn the shutout.

*O'Quinn has played in every minute of every game in net for the Minutemen this season. He has six shutouts and five in Atlantic 10 play. He is tied for second on the UMass single-season shutouts chart. He has made 65 saves and has a 0.90 goals against average.

*The Minutemen conclude regular season play this week. On Oct. 27, UMass travels to the Bronx, N.Y., to take on Fordham at 2:00 p.m., while it plays La Salle, Oct. 29, at 1:00 p.m., in Philadelphia.

Women's Soccer

*UMass went into overtime in both its games last weekend, coming out with a 2-1 loss to Dayton and a 1-1 tie with Xavier to fall to 9-6-1 overall and 5-2-1 Atlantic 10 Conference.

*UMass and host Xavier fought to a 1-1 tie Sunday afternoon, Oct. 22, in women's soccer action. UMass freshman midfielder Amy Mink (West Chester, Ohio) put UMass up 1-0, scoring unassisted at 11:01, but the Minutewomen couldn't hold on to the lead allowing Xavier's Tracy Veith to tie the game at 34:18. Junior goalkeeper Julie Podhrasky (Dallas, Texas) allowed the one XU goal, making three saves for the Minutewomen in the first half. Freshman keeper Kelly Nigh (Seattle, Wash.) held the Musketeers scoreless, while making four saves, in the second half for UMass. XU keeper Megan Veith was forced to make just two saves in the game for Xavier which outshot UMass 12-4.

*Missy Gregg scored 5:19 into overtime to lead host Dayton to a 2-1 victory over UMass Friday night, Oct. 20. UMass senior forward Kara Green (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) put UMass up 1-0, scoring off a pass from junior forward Brooke Bartlett (Clifton Park, N.Y.), at 31:08. DU's Judi Aschenbrener scored off a rebound to tie the game seventeen minutes into the second half and send it to overtime. Goalkeeper Julie Podhrasky made five saves for the Minutewomen, who were outshot 22-6 by the Flyers. DU keeper Stephanie Weisenfeld was forced to make just one save on the night.

*Kara Green's goal last weekend gives her 110 career points. She is currently second among UMass' all-time point scorers, 14 points behind Emma Kurowski and her 124 career points scored between 1996 to 1999.

*UMass wraps up the regular season with a pair of games at home this weekend. Friday, Oct. 27, the Minutewomen host Fordham at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29, UMass will honor its two seniors, Kara Ciocca (Wilbraham, Mass.) and Kara Green, prior to a 1:00 p.m. start with La Salle.

Volleyball

*Volleyball played three five-game matches last week, winning two of three. On Tuesday, the Minutewomen dropped UConn (15-6, 8-15, 15-7, 15-17, 15-11), on Saturday they defeated Dayton in thrilling fashion (15-8, 15-5, 9-15, 2-15, 17-15). Their only loss on the week came to Xavier (10-15, 15-11, 17-15, 9-15, 11-15) on Friday night.

*Senior Rebecca Hasson (Riverside, Calif.) tallied a total of 57 kills and 19 digs on the week, while junior Lymarie Llovet (Arecibo, Puerto Rico) continued her solid play with two double-doubles on the week and and totals of 46 kills and 34 digs. Senior setter Jenni Drennan (Long Beach, Calif.) dished out 167 assists in the three matches.

*The Maroon & White return to action on Wednesday Oct. 25, as they travel to Rhode Island to take on the Rams at 7:00 p.m. UMass returns to action at Curry Hicks Cage this weekend for two important Atlantic-10 matches against Fordham and George Washington on Friday and Saturday. Both matches are slated for 7:00 p.m.

Women's Tennis

*The Minutewomen were off last week. They will take their 4-1 record to Columbia on Friday, Oct. 27. The following day, they will restore their regional rivalry with UConn when they travel to Storrs, Conn. and wrap up their fall dual match schedule.

Men's Tennis

*The men's tennis team remained unbeaten this past week by knocking off Atlantic 10 rival Rhode Island and St. John's. Freshman Brent Davis (San Diego, Calif.) continued his hot play as he went 2-0 and upped his overall record to 11-1. *The Minutemen will be off until Saturday, Oct. 28, when they will play regional power UConn. That will be the last dual match of the fall for UMass. They will conclude the season at the ITA Champioship, Nov. 2-6.

Men's Water Polo

*Junior Adam Moore (Sinking Spring, Pa.) scored eight goals last weekend including four vs. St. Francis, three vs. Queens, and one vs. Fordham. Moore now has 43 goals on the season, second most on the team.

*Junior Mike Foley (Tustin, Calif.) scored five goals last weekend including three vs. St. Francis and one vs. Queens. Foley also added two goals, two assists, and two steals vs. Fordham.

*Junior goalie and co-captian J.R. VanderWall (Rockford, Mi.) had 26 saves this weekend including nine vs. St. Francis, 12 vs. Queens, and five while only playing the first half of the game vs. Fordham.

*UMass' lone Senior, Brook O'Neill (Anapolis, Md.) ,was recognized before Saturday'a evening match. O'Neill, who has the lowest number of turnovers of any starter on the team,was appearing in the final home tournament of his career. .

*The Minutemen scored a season-high 24 goals in their win over Fordham Saturday afternoon, Oct. 21.

*UMass returns to action next Saturday, Oct. 28, as the Minutemen travel to Princeton, N.J. to partake in the ECAC Championships.

Men's Swimming

*Senior Chris Arsenault (Peabody, Mass.), senior Billy Brown (Fullerton, Calif.) and freshman Logan Alomar (Silver Spring, Md.) each won two events to lead the men's swimming and diving team to a 180-110 victory over New Hampshire in the season opener at Joseph R. Rogers, Jr. Pool. UMass won 12 out of the 16 events.

*Arsenault won the 200 fly (1:55.83) and the 100 free (46.85), while Brown won the 100 (1:00.48) and 200 (2:10.97) breast. Alomar placed first in the one-meter diving with a score of 245.40 and the three-meter diving with a score of 256.05.

*Other winners included sophomore Rob Bellamy (Columbia, Md.) in the 200 back (2:00.00), freshman Pete Tawcynski (Holden, Mass.) in the 1000 free (10:19.69), sophomore Tommy Keane (Melrose, Mass.) in the 200 free (1:47.60), sophomore Ryan Zaucha (Auburn, Calif.) in the 100 back (54:16) and senior Mike Sabina (Avon, Mass.) in the 50 free (22.09). The 200 medley relay team of Zaucha, Brown, Arsenault and Bellamy finished first with a time of 1:37.27.

*The Minutemen return to action on Nov. 4, when they host Central Connecticut at 1:00 p.m., at Joseph R. Rogers, Jr. Pool.

Women's Swimming

*Junior Anne Dettloff (Barrington, Ill.), junior Andrea Kazanjian (Troy, N.Y.), freshman Diana Alberti (Wantagh, N.Y.) and sophomore Kate Allery (South Hadley, Mass.) each won two events to lead the women's swimming and diving team to a 187.5-112.5 win over New Hampshire at Joseph R. Rogers, Jr. Pool, in the season opener on Oct. 21.

*Dettloff won the 200 (1:56.43) and 500 (5:12.03) free, while Alberti won the 100 (1:00.98) and 200 (2:12.51) fly. Kazanjian won the 50 free (24.94) and 100 (54.38), while Allery finished first in the one-meter (230.78) and three-meter (254.03) dive.

*Other UMass winners were junior Becky Hunnewell (Sandwich, Mass.) in the 200 back (2:07.38) and freshman Lauren Rowell (Hamburg, N.Y.) in the 200 IM (2:14.36). The 200 medley relay team of Rowell, freshman Christen Dexter (Centerfield, Mass.), Kazanjian and Dettloff placed first with a time of 1:50.35, while the 200 free relay team of sophomore Lizzy Boyle (Darien, Conn.), Kazanjian, Hunnewell and Dettloff won the event with a time of 1:39.30.

*The Minutewomen return to action on Nov. 4, when they host Central Connecticut at 1:00 p.m., at Joseph R. Rogers, Jr. Pool.
