Composite Schedule

Field Hockey

*The Minutewomen went 3-0 on the week, while winning two key games against A-10 opponents. The Minutewomen started the week off at Providence winning 1-0 in overtime. UMass then traveled to Philadelphia where the Minutewomen beat Temple, 2-1 and St. Joseph's, 1-0, in overtime.

*Kristen Schmidt (Greenfield, Mass.) continued to score at key times as she scored the first of three UMass penalty strokes to give the Minutewomen the overtime victory at Providence. Zowie Tucker (Neath, South Wales) stopped all six shots during play and all eight penalty strokes.

*Schmidt and Kaitlyn Bryon (Greenfield, Mass.) scored in the 2-1 victory over Temple to open the Atlantic 10 season. Schmidt scored again the following day, just seven minutes into overtime, to give UMass a 1-0 victory over St. Joseph's.

*Tucker made nine saves against Temple and six more, en route to her sixth shutout of the year, at St. Joseph's.

*The Minutewomen return to action Saturday, Oct. 21, at 1:00 p.m. as they travel to take on Rhode Island.

Men's Soccer

*The men's soccer team went 1-1 last week. The Minutemen defeated George Washington, 1-0, on Oct. 15, and fell to Harvard, 1-0, on Oct. 11. UMass is now 8-4-2 overall and 4-0-1 in the Atlantic 10.

*Sophomore forward Jeff Deren (Chicopee, Mass) scored at the 34:11 mark to give UMass the win versus George Washington. Deren scored off a rebound of a save by George Washington goalie Nick Parypinski. Junior goalie Bryan O'Quinn (Feeding Hills, Mass.) made four saves earning his fourth shutout of the season. The Minutemen out shot the Colonials 16-13, including an 11-2 advantage in the first half.

*Harvard scored the lone goal of the game at the 75:10 mark in UMass' loss to the Crimson. O'Quinn made five saves in the loss.

*Deren leads the team in scoring with seven goals, while sophomore Yuri Morales (Santa Cruz, Calif.) is second on the team with two goals and five assists for nine points. Deren leads the team with four game-winning goals.

*O'Quinn has played in every minute of every game in net for the Minutemen this season. He has made 47 saves and has a 0.88 goals against average. O'Quinn has four shutouts with three in UMass' five Atlantic 10 games, and has a .55 Atlantic 10 goals against average.

*The Minutemen have three Atlantic 10 games on their schedule this week. On Wednesday, Oct. 18, UMass travels to Kingston, R.I., to take on Rhode Island at 7:00 p.m. The Rams are 10-3-1 overall and 5-0-0 in the Atlantic 10. The Minutemen then host their final home games of the season on Friday, Oct. 20, versus Dayton at 3:30 p.m., and on Sunday, Oct. 22, versus Xavier at 1:00 p.m. Dayton is 10-3-0 overall and 5-1-0 in the Atlantic 10, while Xavier is 4-10-0 overall and 4-2-0 in the A-10.

Women's Soccer

*UMass won its only game of the week last Sunday, beating George Washington, 2-1. The Minutewomen have won their last five to improve to 9-5 overall and 5-1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

*Senior forward Kara Green (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) score at 53:56 turned out to be the game winner as UMass won its fifth straight game with a 2-1 victory over George Washington (4-11/3-3 A-10) Sunday afternoon at Totman Field. The goal, set up by junior midfielder Martha Conover (Liverpool, N.Y.), gave head coach Jim Rudy his 250th career win. UMass Junior forward Brooke Bartlett (Clifton Park, N.Y.) scored the only goal of the first half, off a pass from Green, at 19:58. Kim Warner scored GW's lone goal at 84:15. Tiffany Williams and Erin Coppedge earned assists on the score. Junior goalkeeper Julie Podhrasky (Dallas, Texas) made three saves for the Minutewomen, who outshot the Colonials 18-4. GW keeper Christine O'Malley finished the game with seven saves.

*With UMass' win Sunday, head coach Jim Rudy earned his 250th career victory. The Minutewomen's 6-0 win over Temple, on Oct. 8, gave him his 175th victory at UMass.

*Kara Green's goal and assist last weekend gives her 108 career points. She is currently second among UMass' all-time point scorers, 16 points behind Emma Kurowski and her 124 career points scored between 1996 to 1999.

*UMass hits the road for a game at the University of Dayton Friday, Oct. 20, and Xavier University Sunday, Oct. 22, and then wraps up the regular season with a two-game home stance, Oct. 27 & 29.

Volleyball

*Volleyball posted a 1-1 record last week, as they defeated La Salle, 3-0 (15-8, 15-11, 15-5) and lost to Temple 3-1, (13-15, 15-12, 13-15, 10-15).

*Junior Lymarie Llovet (Arecibo, Puerto Rico) registered a total of 24 kills and 26 digs to pace the Minutewomen in the two matches. Senior Rebecca Hasson (Riverside, Calif.) was also solid as she tallied a total of 20 kills. The Minutewomen now stand at 7-10 overall and 4-4 in the A-10. *UMass returns to action this week with three home matches at Curry Hicks Cage. On Tuesday, Oct. 17, the Minutewomen entertain rival UConn, while this weekend, Oct. 20 & 21, they will host conference foes Xavier and Dayton. All matches begin at 7:00 p.m.

Women's Tennis

*The women's tennis team was victorious in their two matches this week. Last Monday, they knocked off Central Connecticut ,9-0, and on Wednesday, they defeated Dartmouth College, 7-2. The Minutewomen now stand at 4-1 on the season.

*Freshman Fransesca Mancini (Milan, Italy) continues to shine. After winning her two matches last week, she remains unbeaten this season. Including her victory at the Easter Tennis Championships, she is now 9-0 in her matches.

*The Minutewomen will next be in action Friday, Oct. 27, when they travel to Columbia University.

Men's Tennis

*The University of Massachusetts men's tennis team closed out the week with a strong showing at the UConn Invitational. Freshman Brent Davis (San Diego, Calif.) took the Flight B Singles Championship with his win over UConn's Max Zubatsky, 6-3, 6-4.

*The Minutemen were victorious in their two matches over the week, as well. Last Monday, they swept Central Connecticut 7-0, and on Tuesday, they nipped Boston College 4-3. The Maroon and White have been led by the strong play of freshmen. In addition, to winning his flight at the UConn Invitational, Brent Davis has also compiled a 4-0 dual match record. Aron Gortman (Beverly Hills, Calif.), Phillip Rodriques (Estoril, Portugal), and Rory Theis (Bloomington, Minn.) have helped the Minutemen off to their undefeated start.

*This week, the Minutemen will have two home matches. On Tuesday, Oct. 17, they will host the Rams of Rhode Island at 2:30, and Saturday, Oct. 21, it will be the Red Storm invading the Upper Boyden Courts.

Men's Water Polo

*The No. 11 men's water polo fell to three of the nations' top-twenty teams last weekend. UMass opened its' west coast road trip at Pepperdine but fell to the Waves 10-7. They then played No. 7 Long Beach State, and lost 9-5. UMass wrapped up the road trip with a 9-6 loss to No. 13 Loyola Maramount.

*Junior Mike Foley (Tustin, Calif) scored six goals over the weekend to lead the UMass offense.

*Junior co-captain J.R. Vanderwall (Rockford, Mich.) has made 139 saves in goal this season.

*UMass returns to action this Saturday, Oct. 21, as the Minutemen have their only home stand of the season begining at 10:00 a.m., against Connecticut College at Amherst College. They will then play Fordham at 2:30 p.m., and St. Francis at 8:30 p.m. The weekend will conclude with an afternoon match against Queens, Sunday, Oct. 22, at 2:30 p.m.
