Field Hockey
*The Minutewomen had one of the best weeks of the year last week beating Harvard, 1-0, in double overtime and No. 7 UConn, 2-1, at Garber Field.
*Anke Bruemmer (Koeln, Germany) scored the game winner with assists from Patty Robinson (Norwood, Mass.) and Lucy Koch (Ipswich, Mass.) against UConn Saturday afternoon. Lindsay Abbott (Northampton, Mass.) scored the other goal with 4:41 left in first half.
*Robinson scored the game winner in double overtime at Harvard for the 1-0 win. Robinson's first goal of the year came in the 95th minute.
*Bruemmer is currently tied for seventh on the all-time career list in goals, with 35 and tied for ninth in points with 76.
*The Minutewomen return to action Wednesday, Oct. 4, at 7:00 p.m. as they host Boston University at Garber Field, followed by a matchup with Syracuse on Saturday, Oct. 7, at 1:00 p.m.
Men's Soccer
*The men's soccer team went 1-0-1 in its first week of Atlantic 10 action. The Minutemen defeated St. Bonaventure, 2-1, in sudden-victory overtime on Sept. 29, and tied Duquesne, 0-0, on Oct. 1. UMass is now 5-3-2 on the season.
*Senior Benny Hoffman (Allentown, Pa.) scored the game winning goal, 3:36 into sudden victory overtime, to give UMass the win over St. Bonaventure. After a scoreless first half, UMass got on the board when freshman Obie Gravely (Richmond, Va.) put the ball into the left corner of the net from just outside the penalty box with an assist to freshman Dan Colwell (Spencer, Mass.), at the 47:16 mark. The Bonnies answered back a little over a minute later. After a foul on the Bonnies just outside the penalty box, Hoffman shot the ball into the upper right corner of the goal on a direct kick.
*UMass outshot the Dukes, 29-6, including a 7-1 advantage in overtime, in the 0-0 tie. UMass junior goalie Bryan O'Quinn (Feeding Hills, Mass.) made two saves, while Terry McNelis made 12 saves for Duquesne.
*O'Quinn has played every minute of every game in net for the Minutemen this season. He has made 30 saves and has a 0.93 goals against average.
*The Minutemen return to action when they travel to Philadelphia to take on St. Joseph's, on Oct. 6, at 7:30 p.m, and Temple on Oct. 8, at 1:00 p.m.
Women's Soccer
*UMass went 2-0 last weekend, beating Temple, 2-1 in double overtime, Friday and Temple, 6-0, Sunday. The Minutewomen have won their last four to improve to 8-5 overall and 4-1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
*Sophomore defender Holly Wildenhaus (Centerville, Ohio) scored the game winning goal 8:37 into the second overtime to lead UMass to a 2-1 conference victory over St. Joseph's last Friday, Oct. 6, at Totman Field. It was Wildenhaus' first career goal, sixth point of her career. UMass got on the board first when senior forward Kara Green (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) scored, unassisted, 4:54 into the game. The Minutwomen's lead hung on until 48:43 when Katie Wilson tied it up for SJU to send the game into overtime. Junior goalkeeper Julie Podhrasky (Dallas, Texas) made four saves for UMass, which outshot the Hawks 23-12.
*Junior midfielder Katelyn Jones (Round Lake, N.Y.) scored the first three goals of the game to lead UMass to a 6-0 victor over Temple Sunday, Oct. 8, at Totman Field. Jones gave UMass a 3-0 halftime lead, scoring at 6:55, 8:25 and 38:15 of the first half. Junior midfielder Anna Morozuk (Croton Falls, N.Y.) scored the Minutewomen's fourth goal at 66:04 followed by two goals by freshman midfielder Amy Mink (West Chester, Ohio) at 81:52 and 88:39. Junior forward Brooke Bartlett (Clifton Park, N.Y.). assisted on two of Jones' goals and added another assist on Morozuk's score. Senior forward Kara Green set up Mink on her first goal while freshman midfielder Kristin Mena (North Grafton, Mass.) did the same on Mink's second goal. Julie Podhrasky made four saves for UMass in the first half while freshman keeper Kelly Nigh (Seattle, Wash.) made one in the second half for the Minutewomen who outshot the Owls 21-7.
*With UMass' two wins last weekend, head coach Jim Rudy earned his 248th & 49th wins of his career making him just one win shy of the 250 mark. The Minutwomen's 6-0 win over Temple gave him his 175th victory at UMass.
*Katelyn Jones' hat trick, the first of her career, against Temple was the second this year for UMass. Freshman forward Erin Lilly (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) also recorded a hat trick in UMass' 9-0 win over Albany back on Sept. 2.
*Kara Green's goal and assist last weekend gives her 105 career points. She is currently second among UMass' all-time point scorers, 19 points behind Emma Kurowski and her 124 career points scored between 1996 to 1999.
*Kara Green (15) and Brooke Bartlett (9), combined, had over half (24) of UMass' 44 shots over the weekend.
Volleyball
*Volleyball went 2-1 last week to improve to 5-9 this season and 2-3 in the Atlantic 10. The Minutewomen swept Rhode Island last Wednesday (15-10,15-5,15-5) in their home-opener. Junior Janeen DeMarte (El Paso, Texas) paced the team with 10 kills and nine digs. At George Washington on Friday night, UMass fell in three games (15-10,15-2,16-14), with senior Rebecca Hasson (Riverside, Calif.) posting a team-high 12 kills and seven digs in the loss. The Minutewomen then wrapped up the weekend with a solid sweep of Fordham on the road, downing the Rams, 15-10, 15-12 and 15-8. Hasson tallied 22 kills in the win.
*Junior Lauren Vander Veen (Oakland, Calif.) put on a strong showing against Fordham on Sunday afternoon, recording 10 kills in 13 attacks with just two errors, for a career-high .615 hitting percentage. For the week, Vander Veen hit .500.
*UMass will return home this weekend to host Duquesne on Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. in Curry Hicks Cage.
Men's Water Polo
*No. 12 water polo team (13-3) had won 10 in a row before falling to No. 15 Navy in double overtime at the North / South Invitational last weekend.
*The Minutemen picked up wins over George Washington 17-3, Bucknell 13-11, and No. 16 Princeton 10-4.
* Carlos Ramso (Anasco, Puerto Rico) scored five goals, and tallied three assists this past weekend.
* Junior goalie and Co-captain J.R. VanderWall (Rockford, Mich.) picked up 28 saves over four games. He now has 104 on the season.
*The Minutemen return to action on Saturday, Oct. 7, when they travel to Brooklyn, N.Y. to participate in the CWPA League Tournament against Brown and the U.S. Merchant Marines Academy
Women's Tennis
*The women's tennis team improved to 2-1 with a 9-0 win last Saturday over St. John's. This was the first match for the Minutewomen since a loss to Boston University. Freshman Fransesca Mancini (Milan, Italy) is now 7-0 after straight sets victory last Saturday.
*The Minutewomen will host Central Connecticut Monday and travel to Dartmouth for a match with the Big Green Wednesday.
Men's Tennis
*The men's tennis team won their only match of the week by sweeping the Terriers of Boston University. They improved to 2-0 with the win. Todd Champeau (Waukesha, Wisc.), Aron Gortman (Beverly Hills, Calif.), and Will Shaw (Norwell, Mass.) all improved their overall records to 4-1.
*The Minutemen have a busy week upcoming as they will host Central Connecticut Monday, travel to Boston College Tuesday for a match rescheduled from last Thursday, and participate in the UConn Invitational next weekend.
