Field Hockey
*The Minutewomen had one of the best weeks of the year last week beating Harvard, 1-0, in double overtime and No. 7 UConn, 2-1, at Garber Field.
*Anke Bruemmer (Koeln, Germany) scored the game winner with assists from Patty Robinson (Norwood, Mass.) and Lucy Koch (Ipswich, Mass.) against UConn Saturday afternoon. Lindsay Abbott (Northampton, Mass.) scored the other goal with 4:41 left in first half.
*Robinson scored the game winner in double overtime at Harvard for the 1-0 win. Robinson's first goal of the year came in the 95th minute.
*Bruemmer is currently tied for seventh on the all-time career list in goals, with 35 and tied for ninth in points with 76.
*The Minutewomen return to action Wednesday, Oct. 4, at 7:00 p.m. as they host Boston University at Garber Field, followed by a matchup with Syracuse on Saturday, Oct. 7, at 1:00 p.m.
Men's Soccer
*The men's soccer team went 1-0-1 in its first week of Atlantic 10 action. The Minutemen defeated St. Bonaventure, 2-1, in sudden-victory overtime on Sept. 29, and tied Duquesne, 0-0, on Oct. 1. UMass is now 5-3-2 on the season.
*Senior Benny Hoffman (Allentown, Pa.) scored the game winning goal, 3:36 into sudden victory overtime, to give UMass the win over St. Bonaventure. After a scoreless first half, UMass got on the board when freshman Obie Gravely (Richmond, Va.) put the ball into the left corner of the net from just outside the penalty box with an assist to freshman Dan Colwell (Spencer, Mass.), at the 47:16 mark. The Bonnies answered back a little over a minute later. After a foul on the Bonnies just outside the penalty box, Hoffman shot the ball into the upper right corner of the goal on a direct kick.
*UMass outshot the Dukes, 29-6, including a 7-1 advantage in overtime, in the 0-0 tie. UMass junior goalie Bryan O'Quinn (Feeding Hills, Mass.) made two saves, while Terry McNelis made 12 saves for Duquesne.
*O'Quinn has played every minute of every game in net for the Minutemen this season. He has made 30 saves and has a 0.93 goals against average.
*The Minutemen return to action when they travel to Philadelphia to take on St. Joseph's, on Oct. 6, at 7:30 p.m, and Temple on Oct. 8, at 1:00 p.m.
Women's Soccer
*UMass went 2-0 last weekend, beating St. Bonaventure, 2-0, Friday and Dusquene, 2-1, Sunday. The Minutewomen are 6-5 overall and 2-1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference heading into this weekend's conference action.
Kara Ciocca (Wilbraham, Mass.) connected on a pass from Brooke Bartlett (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and Alexi Rudd (Orinda, Calif.) at 60:08 into the game to break a scoreless tie and propel UMass to its 2-0 victory over St. Bonaventure last Friday, Sept. 29, afternoon. Bartlett added an insurance goal for the Minutewomen, who outshot St.Bonaventure 13-6, twenty minutes later off a cross by Martha Conover(Liverpool, N.Y.) and Janelle Khouri (Calgary, Alberta). UMass junior goalkeeper Julie Podhrasky (Dallas, Texas) made two saves to record her second shutout of the season.
Ciocca scored a pair of goals to lead UMass to its 2-1 victory at Duquesne Sunday, Oct. 1, afternoon. After a scoreless first half, Ciocca gave UMass a 1-0 lead when she connected off a pass from senior forward Kara Green (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) at 58:43. Ciocca scored her second of the day, unassisted, at 82:14. UMass freshman goalkeeper Kelly Nigh (Seattle, Wash.) made a career-high six saves in her first A-10 start.
*UMass returns home after a six-game road trip for a game Friday, Oct. 6, with St. Joseph's at 3:00 p.m. The Minutewomen then host Temple Sunday, Oct. 8, at 1:00 p.m.
*Kara Ciocca's team-leading seven goals and 15 points this season are both career-highs for the senior.
*Kara Green's assist against Duquesne Sunday, gave her 102 career points and moved her into second among UMass' all-time point scorer's, behind Emma Kurowski and her 124 career points (1996-99)
Volleyball
*Volleyball went 2-1 last week to improve to 5-9 this season and 2-3 in the Atlantic 10. The Minutewomen swept Rhode Island last Wednesday (15-10,15-5,15-5) in their home-opener. Junior Janeen DeMarte (El Paso, Texas) paced the team with 10 kills and nine digs. At George Washington on Friday night, UMass fell in three games (15-10,15-2,16-14), with senior Rebecca Hasson (Riverside, Calif.) posting a team-high 12 kills and seven digs in the loss. The Minutewomen then wrapped up the weekend with a solid sweep of Fordham on the road, downing the Rams, 15-10, 15-12 and 15-8. Hasson tallied 22 kills in the win.
*Junior Lauren Vander Veen (Oakland, Calif.) put on a strong showing against Fordham on Sunday afternoon, recording 10 kills in 13 attacks with just two errors, for a career-high .615 hitting percentage. For the week, Vander Veen hit .500.
*UMass will return home this weekend to host Duquesne on Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. in Curry Hicks Cage.
Men's Water Polo
*No. 12 water polo team (13-3) had won 10 in a row before falling to No. 15 Navy in double overtime at the North / South Invitational last weekend.
*The Minutemen picked up wins over George Washington 17-3, Bucknell 13-11, and No. 16 Princeton 10-4.
* Carlos Ramso (Anasco, Puerto Rico) scored five goals, and tallied three assists this past weekend.
* Junior goalie and Co-captain J.R. VanderWall (Rockford, Mich.) picked up 28 saves over four games. He now has 104 on the season.
*The Minutemen return to action on Saturday, Oct. 7, when they travel to Brooklyn, N.Y. to participate in the CWPA League Tournament against Brown and the U.S. Merchant Marines Academy
Women's Tennis *The UMass women's tennis team dropped their only match of the week, 6-3, to Boston University last Wednesday afternoon. This dropped their dual match record to 1-1. Freshman Francesca Mancini (Milan, Italy) won the only singles match for the Minutewomen improving her record to 2-0 in dual match play and 6-0 overall. UMass did pick up two doubles points led by teams of Mancini and Jafra Despontes (Kaliua-Kona, Hawaii) and Helena Horak (Westlake Village, Calif.) and Susan Hyams (Cincinnati, Ohio). Despontes and Mancini are now 2-0 together in dual match play.
*The Minutewomen are off until Wednesday, Oct. 11, when they travel to Dartmouth for a match at 2:00 p.m.
Men's Tennis
*The UMass men's tennis team won their only match of the week by defeating University of Hartford, 7-0, last Thursday in a match rescheduled from Tuesday due to rain, to improve their dual match record to 1-0. Todd Champeau (Waukesha, Wisc.), Brent Davis (San Diego, Calif.), Aron Gortman (Beverly Hills, Calif.), Bill Greener (Walpole, Mass.), Steve Prisco (Dedham, Mass.), and Will Shaw (Norwell, Mass.) all picked up singles wins in the match. The teams of Champeau and Rory Theis (Bloomington, Minn.) and Davis/Shaw picked up the doubles point.
*The Minutemen will make two trips to the state capitol this week when they visit Boston University on Monday at 2:00 p.m. and Boston College Thursday at 3:00 p.m.
Cross Country
*The women's team finished 11th and the men's teamed finished 17th at the Meet of Champions hosted by Iona University, Saturday, Oct. 2.
*Kristin Cisowski (Salem, N.H.) finished first for the Minutewomen in 39th place with a time of 22:05.
*Mike Pieck (Guilderland, N.Y.) led the Minutemen finishing 63rd with a time of 26:00.
Hockey
*UMass men's hockey starts the season this weekend, Friday and Saturday, Oct. 6 & 7, at Wisconsin.
