Field Hockey

*The Minutewomen rebounded after a tough loss to Maryland defeating the University at Albany, Sept. 21, 3-0 at Garber Field. Senior goaltender Zowie Tucker (Neath, South Wales) made three saves, en route to her third shutout of the year.

*Anke Bruemmer (Koeln, Germany) and Kristen Schmidt (Greenfield, Mass.) currently lead the team in goals with six apiece. Patty Robinson (Norwood, Mass.) leads the team in assists with eight, while Lucy Koch (Ipswich, Mass.) is second with seven.

*Bruemmer is currently tied for seventh on the all-time career list in goals, with 34 and ninth in points with 74.

*UMass up-coming games include some tough regional action. UMass will first face off with Harvard, when the Minutewomen travel to Cambridge on Wednesday, Sept. 27 at 7:00 p.m. UMass is 7-1-1 all-time verus the Crimson and came out on top of a tough 3-2 battle last season. On Saturday, Sept. 30, at 1:00 p.m., the Minutewomen will go up against No. 7 UConn at Garber Field. UMass looks to gain revenge, as the Huskies took two games from the Minutewomen in 1999, including knocking UMass out of the NCAA Tournament with a 2-1 win in the quarterfinals.

*Robinson, with her 39th career assist against Albany, Sept. 21, moved into a tie for second place on UMass' all-time career assists list.

Men's Soccer

*The men's soccer team went 2-0-1 on the week. The Minutemen defeated New Hampshire, 3-1 on Sept. 20, defeated Binghamton 2-0 in the UMass Classic on Sept. 22 and tied Fresno State, 1-1 in the championship game of the UMass Classic. UMass is now 4-3-1 on the season.

* Sophomore Jeff Deren (Chicopee, Mass.) scored four out of UMass' six goals this past week, while sophomore Yuri Morales (Santa Cruz, Calif.) scored the other two.

*Deren scored two goals in the 3-1 win over New Hampshire. Morales tied the game at 1-1 at the 54:27 mark when he put the put the ball in the lower left of the net. Five minutes later at the 59:44 mark, Deren gave UMass the lead for good when he scored off a cross from junior Fred Kinateder (Waukesha, Wis.). The Minutemen put the game away when Deren scored off a rebound from a shot from freshman Devlin Barnes (Bethesda, Md.).

*Deren scored two goals again in the Binghamton win. The Minutemen took the lead early in the game as Deren scored off a pass from Morales as the two broke free on a two-on-one at 21:34. In the second half, the Minutemen extended their lead as Deren headed a throw-in from senior Seth Lilburn (Boonton Township, N.J.) to make it 2-0 at 45:52.

*Morales scored the only goal of the game for UMass at the 72:21 mark off a throw-in from Lilburn in the tie with Fresno State. Junior goalie Bryan O'Quinn (Feeding Hills, Mass.) made two saves, including save on a Fresno State breakaway in the first overtime period.

*Green earned defensive MVP honors for his performance in the two-game UMass Classic, while O'Quinn received co-goalie MVP honors. Green, Morales, junior J.R. Pouncey (Houston, Texas) and Deren all earned All-Tournament accolades.

*The Minutemen return to action when they host St. Bonaventure on Friday, Sept. 29, at 3:30 p.m., in the Atlantic 10 season-opener at Totman Field. UMass then hosts Duquesne on Sunday, Oct. 1, at 1:00 p.m.

Women's Soccer

*UMass went 1-1 in Tempe, Ariz. last weekend, beating San Diego State, 2-1, Friday and losing to 18th-ranked Arizona State, 2-0, Sunday. The Minutewomen are 4-5 heading into this week's action.

*Freshman midfielder Amy Mink (West Chester, Ohio) scored with 2:30 left in the game to give UMass a 2-1 win over San Diego State (2-7) late Friday night in Tempe, Ariz. The win snapped a two-game skid for the Minutewomen. Senior forward Kara Ciocca (Wilbraham, Mass.) got UMass on the board first, scoring off a cross by junior forward Brooke Bartlett (Clifton Park, N.Y.) 11:02 into the game. San Diego State's Jane Specht tied it up before halftime, scoring on a SDSU corner at 39:03. UMass junior goalkeeper Julie Podhrasky (Dallas, Texas) allowed the one Aztec goal and recorded one save in the first half. Freshman keeper Kelly Nigh (Seattle, Wash.) held San Diego State scoreless and made three saves in the second half for the Minutewomen.

*A goal by Temryss Lane 27:55 into the game turned out to be all 18th-ranked Arizona State (9-0) needed as it shutout UMass 2-0 late Sunday night. Stacey Tullock scored the final goal of the game, with less than five minutes to go in regulation, for the Sun Devils, who outshot UMass 16-3. Podhrasky tied her career high in saves with nine, making eight of them in the second half.

*UMass returns to conference play Friday, Sept. 29, with a game at St. Bonaventure at 3:00 p.m. The Minutewomen wrap up their six-game road trip with a 1:00 p.m. game at Duquesne Sunday, Oct. 1.

Volleyball

*Volleyball opened the Atlantic 10 season on Sept. 22 and 23, versus Dayton and Xavier, respectively. The Minutewomen were swept by the Flyers on Friday night, 15-10, 15-12, 15-5. Senior Rebecca Hasson (Riverside, Calif.) paced UMass with 15 kills in the loss, while junior Lymarie Llovet (Arecibo, Puerto Rico) posted a double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs. On Saturday night against the Musketeers, the Minutewomen fought a tough battle, but fell in five games (0-15, 9-15, 15-7, 16-14, 14-16). UMass was led by Hasson, who tallied 21 kills, while freshman Kuulei Kamanao (Honolulu, Hawaii) registered a career-high 20 digs in the match. The Minutewomen now stand at 3-8 overall season and 0-2 in conference action.

*UMass will have its home-opener in Curry Hicks Cage on Wednesday, Sept. 27, versus Rhode Island at 7:00 p.m. The Minutewomen will then hit the road again this weekend with contests against George Washington and Fordham on Sept. 29 and Oct. 1, respectively. Hasson is leading the team in kills and blocks this season, averaging 4.20 kills and 1.05 Blocks per game. Llovet tops the team in digs with 2.45 digs per game.

Men's Water Polo

*The No. 12 University of Massachusetts men's water polo team picked up three more wins this weekend as it defeated No. 20 Harvard (12-7), M.I.T. (21-5) and Boston College (15-7) at the Collegiate Water Polo Association Tournament. UMass is now 10-2 overall on the season, and 3-0 in the CWPA.

*Junior Mike Foley (Tustin, Calif.) scored 11 goals, with six coming against Harvard and five against M.I.T.

*In goal, junior J.R. VanderWall (Rockford, Mich.) made 19 saves. He now has 76 saves on the season.

*The Minutemen return to action on Saturday, Sept. 30, when they travel to Princeton, to participate in the North/South Invitational.

Women's Tennis

*Women's tennis competed in one match this past week against cross-town rival Amherst College on Sept. 19. The Minutewomen won the match, 6-3, to jump out to, a 1-0 record, in dual-matches during the fall campaign. UMass captured five out of six singles matches in the victory, while dropping one of three doubles points. Freshmen Francesca Mancini (Milan, Italy), Jafra Depontes (Kaliua-Kona, Hawaii), Susan Hyams (Cincinnati, Ohio) and junior Helena Horak (Westlake Village, Calif.) all picked up singles victories, while the duo of Depontes and Mancini captured a doubles win for the Minutewomen.

*UMass is next in action on Wednesday, Sept. 27, versus Boston University at the Upper Boyden Tennis Courts.
