UMass Weekly Sports Notebook...

Composite Schedule

Field Hockey

*The Minutewomen lost their only game of the week to defending national champions and current No. 1 team in the nation, Maryland, 0-2 on Sept. 16. Zowie Tucker (Neath, South Wales) stopped 13 shots on the evening.

*Anke Bruemmer (Koeln, Germany) and Kristen Schmidt (Greenfield, Mass.) currently lead the team in goals with five apiece. Patty Robinson (Norwood, Mass.) leads the team in assists with seven, while Lucy Koch (Ipswich, Mass.) is second with six.

*Bruemmer is currently 10th on the All-Time career list in goals, with 33, and points, with 73.

*UMass faces off with Albany on Thursday, Sept. 21, at 7:00 p.m. at Garber Field. This will be the first meeting between the two teams.

*Robinson is now one assist away from moving into a tie for second on the all-time career assists list after recording her 38th and 39th assist against Miami-Ohio.

Men's Soccer

* The men's soccer team went 1-1 on the week with a 2-1 win against Siena on Sept. 17, and a 1-0 loss to Boston University on Sept. 11. UMass is now 2-3-0 on the season.

*Sophomore Derek Rhodes (DePere, Wis.) and sophomore Jeff Deren (Chicopee, Mass.) each scored a goal in the Siena win. Rhodes scored the first goal of the game after a scoreless first half when he scored on a cross from sophomore Yuri Morales (Santa Cruz, Calif.) at the 47:51 mark. Twelve minutes later at the 59:48 mark, Deren gave UMass a two goal lead with an assist to Morales. Junior goalie Bryan O'Quinn (Feeding Hills, Mass.) made five saves to anchor the UMass defense. UMass is now holds a 7-0-2 all-time series advantage.

*The Minutemen return to action when they host New Hampshire on Wednesday, Sept. 20 at 3:30 p.m. UMass holds a 22-10-3 all-time series advantage. UMass then hosts the UMass Classic on Friday, Sept. 22, and Sunday, Sept. 24. On Friday, the Minutemen take on Binghamton at 2:00 p.m., and on Sunday, they take on Fresno State at 1:00 p.m.

Women's Soccer

*UMass was shutout twice as it lost two games last week. The Minutewomen lost 1-0 at No. 20 UConn on Sept. 13 and 3-0 at Rhode Island on Sept. 17, UMass is now 3-4 on the season. Salla Ranta scored the only goal of the night 4:57 into the game to give UConn a 1-0 win over UMass last Wednesday night in front of 1,233 fans at Morrone Stadium. Ranta scored off a header on UConn's first corner kick of the game. Brook Bartlett (Clifton Park, N.Y.) led the Minutewomen's offensive attack with two shots on net. UMass goalkeeper Julie Podhrasky (Dallas, Texas) had nine saves for the Minutewomen who where outshot 14-4 by UConn.

*Goalkeeper Jamie Epperlein made eight saves for Rhode Island to lead the Rams to a 3-0 victory over UMass in the Atlantic 10 conference opener for both teams at the URI Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon. It was the first time since the series began in 1988 that the Rams have beaten the Minutewomen. URI's Mary Drapetis opened the scoring when she put in a pass from Catherine Zanni at the 6:02 mark to give the Rams an early 1-0 lead. Rhode Island would add to their lead later in the first half as Stephanie Boisvert put in a corner kick from Zanni to make the score 2-0. URI closed out the scoring when Shannon Kittleson took a cross from sophomore Gina Rosen to put the Rams ahead 3-0. Podhrasky had eight saves in the first half for UMass. Kelly Nigh (Seattle, Wash.) was untested in the second half.

*Julie Podhrasky had a career-high nine saves at UConn.

*In its two losses, UMass was outshot almost two-to-one (29 to 15).

*UMass travels to Tempe, Ariz. Thursday for a game against San Diego State, Friday, Sept. 22, and No. 18 Arizona State, Sunday, Sept. 24.

Volleyball

*Volleyball competed in the Colorado State Coors Classic last weekend in Fort Collins, Colo. The Minutewomen went 0-3 in the tournament to drop to 3-6 this season. UMass took on No. 4 Colorado State in the first match on Friday night, falling to the Rams in three games (15-2, 15-3, 15-3). Senior Rebecca Hasson (Riverside, Calif.) paced the Minutewomen with six kills in the match. On Saturday, UMass faced Georgia Tech in the afternoon contest, dropping the match (15-3, 15-6, 15-11). Junior Lymarie Llovet (Arecibo, Puerto Rico) and Hasson both posted 15 kills in the win, while Llovet recorded a double-double with 10 digs in the match, as well. In the night cap, the Minutewomen were swept by Loyola-Chicago (15-4, 15-11, 15-10), with Hasson leading the way for UMass with eight kills and eight digs.

*The Minutewomen will begin their Atlantic 10 schedule next weekend, when they travel to Dayton and Xavier on Sept. 22 and 23, respectively. The Flyers are picked to finish second in the conference this season, while the Musketeers are picked fourth. UMass is slated to finish sixth in the conference.

Men's Water Polo

*The No. 13 men's water polo team cruised through two games last weekend at Providence, R.I. defeating No. 14 Harvard (12-7), and host Brown (12-5). UMass is now 7-2 overall on the season.

*Junior Adam Moore (Sinking Springs, Pa.) scored three goals in each game this weekend, and now leads the team with 20 on the season.

*In goal, junior goalie J.R. VanderWall (Rockford, Mich.) added 14 stops versus Harvard and has compiled a season total of 57.

*The Minutemen return to action on Saturday, September 23, when they travel to Cambridge, Mass., to participate in the Collegiate Water Polo Association League Tournament against Boston College, Harvard, and M.I.T., beginning at 11:30 a.m.

Cross Country

*UMass hosted Maine, Boston University, Vermont and Central Connecticut over the weekend. The women finished second and the men finished third as Boston finished first for men's and women's.

*Senior Mike Pieck (Guilder, N.Y.) finished first for the Minutemen, finishing seventh overall with a time of 24:39.

*Junior Kristin Cisowski (Salem, N.H.) finished with a time of 18:51, ninth overall, to lead the Minutewomen.

WOMEN'S WATER POLO

*Donna Heinel has been named the head women's water polo coach, as announced Monday, Sept. 18 by the Director of Athletics Bob Marcum. Heinel was the assistant coach in charge of recruiting, dryland and weight room conditioning, and on deck coaching for the 1999-2000 team which finished fifth at the Collegiate Water Polo Association National Championship. Heinel was also volunteer assistant coach in charge of conditioning of the team during the 1998-99 season when the team finished 10th at the CWPA Nationals.

Women's Tennis

*The women's tennis team competed at the Eastern Tennis Championships last weekend in West Point, N.Y. Freshman Francesca Mancini (Milan, Italy) won four consecutive singles matches to claim the No. 2 singles title in just her first collegiate tournament, while the duo of junior Lindsey Gillooly (Stoughton, Mass.) and freshman Jafra Depontes (Kaliua-Kona, Hawaii) garnered the No. 2 doubles title. The No. 3 seed Mancini downed the No. 4 seed Seton Hall's Courtney Iseldyke in the finals (6-2, 6-1), while the No. 2 seed Gillooly and Depontes defeated the No. 1 seed Binghamton's Heather Binen and Marie Ongseng to win the title (3-6, 6-4, 7-5). Sophomore Katie Stammen (North Attleboro, Mass.) reached the finals of No. 3 singles, before bowing out to the No. 4 seed Seton Hall's Nicole Cercone (6-2, 6-0).

*In other UMass action last weekend, junior Annie Hamilton (Plano, Texas) reached the finals in No. 1 singles consolation action, before falling to the No. 4 seed Seton Hall's Kyli Lassalle (6-4, 6-7(5),6-3) , while the No. 2 seed tandem of junior Helena Horak (Westlake Village, Calif.) and freshman Susan Hyams (Cincinnati, Ohio) claimed a semifinals appearance in No. 1 doubles, before bowing out to the No. 3 seed Army's Annie Collier and Melissa Sentelle (7-5, 6-4). Freshman Caroline Harson (Arlington, Mass.) dropped two matches in No. 4 singles, with losses to the No. 1 seed Army's Lauren Leftin (6-0, 6-0) and Stony Brook's Olesya Ianovitch (6-2, 6-3).

*The Minutewomen are next in action this Tuesday versus area-rival Amherst College at 3:30 p.m. on the campus of Amherst College.
