UMass Weekly Sports Notebook...
Field Hockey
*The Minutewomen enjoyed a solid week going 3-0 and improving to 5-1 on the season. UMass started the week down the Mass Pike at Boston College with a 1-0 win, Sept. 6. The Minutewomen then traveled to Muncie, Ind., where they defeated Ball State, 3-1, Sept. 9, and Miami - Ohio, 2-1, Sept. 10.
*Anke Bruemmer (Koeln, Germany) and Kristen Schmidt (Greenfield, Mass.) currently lead the team in goals with five apiece. Patty Robinson (Norwood, Mass.) leads the team in assists with seven, while Lucy Koch (Ipswich, Mass.) is second with six.
*UMass heads to Maryland to play the defending national champion Terrapins Saturday, Sept. 16 at 1:00 p.m.
*Senior Zowie Tucker (Neath, South Wales) has a 0.88 GAA this season. Her career best for a season is 1.14 set in 1998.
*Robinson is now one assist away from moving into a tie for second on the all-time career assists list after recording her 38th and 39th assist against Miami-Ohio.
Men's Soccer
*The men's soccer team went 1-1 on the week with a 2-1 overtime win against Maine on Sept. 9, and a 2-1 loss to Hartford on Sept. 6. UMass is now 1-2-0 on the season.
*Junior Max Wolf (Shaker Heights, Ohio) scored with 7:04 remaining in the first sudden victory overtime period to give UMass the 2-1 win over Maine. Wolf volleyed the ball into the right side of the net off a cross from freshman Ptah Myers (Columbus, Ohio). Junior Fred Kinateder (Waukesha, Wis.) gave UMass an early lead when he scored off a rebound with an assist to Myers at the 15:06 mark. Senior Benny Hoffman (Allentown, Pa.) scored the lone goal for the Minutemen off an assist from sophomore Andrew Eicher (Billerica, Mass.) in the loss to Hartford.
The Minutemen return to action on Monday, Sept. 11, when they travel to Boston University to take on the Terriers at 7:00 p.m. On Sunday, Sept. 17, UMass travels to Siena to play the Saints at 1:00 p.m. UMass holds a 16-9-4 all-time series advantage over the Terriers, and 6-0-2 advantage over Siena.
Women's Soccer
*UMass went 1-1 at the annual UMass Women's Soccer Classic last weekend. On Friday, Georgia beat UMass 3-1. Brooke Bartlett (Clifton Park, N.Y.) scored the lone goal for the Minutewomen off a cross from Sarah Cook (Cincinnati, Ohio) at 13:06. Julie Podhrasky (Dallas, Texas) has three saves for the Minutewomen. Anna Morozuk (Croton Falls, N.Y.) had a goal and two assists to lead UMass to a 6-0 win over Long Island in the final game of the UMass Women's Soccer Classic Sunday afternoon. Kara Green (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) opened the scoring for the Minutewomen 5:32 into the game with a goal off a cross from Bartlett. Kat Machamer (Highland Ranch, Colo.) scored UMass' second goal, from Kara Ciocca (Wilbraham, Mass.) and Alexi Rudd (Orinda, Calif.), 29:14 later. Ciocca then gave the Minutewomen a 3-0 lead, scoring off a corner kick from Janelle Khouri (Calgary, Alberta) and Morozuk at 61:51. Erin Lilly (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) scored next for the Minutewomen off a rebound shot from Morozuk at 71:51 followed by a goal from Amy Mink (West Chester, Ohio), off a cross from Kristin Mena (North Grafton, Mass.), three minutes later. Morozuk scored the final goal of the game at 80:08 off a pass from Andrea Trujillo (Englewood, Colo.). Freshman goalkeeper Kelly Nigh (Seattle, Wash.) recorded two saves in her first start for UMass.
*Kara Green's game-winning goal against Long Island gave her 101 career points and moved her into a tie for second among UMass' all-time points leaders.
*Amy Mink's goal against Long Island was the first of her collegiate career.
*Erin Lilly was selected Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Week last Tuesday after scoring a team-leading three goals to help lead UMass past Albany, 9-0, on September 2.
*UMass plays its next six games on the road beginning with a trip to Storrs, Conn. to take on No. 7 UConn Wednesday, Sept. 13, at 7:00 p.m. The Minutewomen then travel to Kingston, R.I. Sunday to play Rhode Island at 1:00 p.m.
Volleyball
*Volleyball went 1-2 at the Hofstra University Invitational last weekend, Sept. 8 & 9 in Hempstead, N.Y. The Minutewomen opened the tournament with a 17-15, 15-7, 4-15, 15-7 victory over Cal State-Northridge on Friday night, marking UMass' first win over a team from California in the program's history. The Minutewomen then struggled in Saturday's action, falling in a five-game thriller (17-15, 9-15, 16-14, 11-15, 10-15) to Illinois-Chicago in the morning and dropping 7-15, 14-16, 5-15 to host Hofstra in the night cap. UMass now stands at 3-3 this season.
*Senior Rebecca Hasson (Riverside, Calif.) was named to the All-Tournament Team for her performance throughout the weekend. Hasson posted 22 kills in UMass' win over Cal State-Northridge and a career-high 31 kills versus Illinois-Chicago. She averaged 5.0 kills, 1.92 digs and 1.58 blocks per game over the tournament.
*Freshman Nitia Small (Los Angles, Calif.) made her collegiate debut this past weekend. Small put on a strong showing, posting 1.5 kills and 2.16 digs per game, while starting in all three matches for UMass.
*The Minutewomen will compete in one more tournament this weekend before embarking on the Atlantic 10 schedule. UMass will travel to Fort Collins, Colo. to play in the Colorado State Coors Classic Sept. 15 & 16 with the No. 7 Rams, Georgia Tech and Loyola-Chicago.
Men's Water Polo
* The No. 14 Minutemen swept through four games this weekend at the Harvard Invitational. UMass defeated Boston College (15-3), M.I.T. (12-2), No. 19 Brown (11-6) and No. 20 Harvard (12-4). UMass is now 6-2 overall on the season.
*Junior Adam Moore (Sinking Springs, Pa.) scored eight goals over the weekend, including four versus host Harvard.
*Junior goalie J.R. VanderWall (Rockford, Mich.) made 26 saves on the weekend with nine versus Harvard, eight versus M.I.T., six versus Brown and three versus Boston College.
*The Minutemen return to action on Saturday, Sept. 16, when they travel to Providence, R.I., to take on No. 19 Brown at 6:00 p.m.
Women's Lacrosse
*Phil Barnes has been named the head women's lacrosse coach, as announced Monday, Sept. 11 by the Director's of Athletics Bob Marcom. Barnes, who served this past season as the iterim head coach, has been a part of the UMass women's lacrosse program for the past three seasons.
