Field Hockey
- The field hockey team began its run for another Atlantic 10 title last week. The Minutewomen started off strong winning its first two games of the seaon by a combined score of 10-1.
- Anke Bruemmer (Koeln, Germany) and Lindsay Abbott (Northampton, Mass.) lead the team in goals with three apiece.
- UMass begins a tough part of the 2000 schedule, playing the next four games on the road agaist some of the top teams in the nation including a trip to defending national champion Maryland on Sept. 16. The Minutewomen return to action Wednesday, Sept. 6, at Boston College, followed by a trip to Ball State for a pair of games against Miami of Ohio and Ball State on Sept. 9 and 10.
- The Minutewomen are looking to take the next step after winning four straight A-10 titles. Fourth year head coach Patty Shea has the team directed toward a run at an NCAA championships. The Minutewomen are picked by the coaches of the A-10 to win the title again this year.
Men's Soccer
- The men's soccer team fell to South Carolina, 2-1, on Friday, Sept. 1, in Columbia, S.C., in front of 1,801 people in the season opener for both teams. Senior co-captain Patrick Beattie (Mobile, Ala.) scored UMass' only goal of the game when he put the ball in the top right corner off a corner kick by sophomore Derek Rhodes (DePere, Wis.), at the 15:08 mark. South Carolina earned the victory when Dave Moore scored at the 62:35 mark, with assists to Tim Glowienka and Quinn. Junior goalie Bryan O'Quinn (Feeding Hills, Mass.) anchored the UMass defense with six saves.
- The Minutemen return to action when they host Hartford on Sept. 6, at 3:30 p.m., at Totman Field. UMass has a 3-7-1 all-time record versus Hawks, including a 1-0 win last season at Hartford.
- The Minutemen have been picked to finish fourth in the Atlantic 10 by the coaches. Last season, UMass finished tied for third with a 13-7 overall record and an 8-3 conference mark.
Women's Soccer
- Freshman forward Erin Lilly (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) scored three goals and senior forward Kara Ciocca (Wilbraham, Mass.) added two to pace UMass to a 9-0 victory over Albany (0-2) Sept. 2 at Agawam High School. Junior forward Brooke Bartlett (Clifton Park, N.Y), junior midfielder Kat Machamer (Highland Ranch, Colo.), junior midfielder Martha Conover (Liverpool, N.Y.) and senior forward Kara Green (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) also scored goals for UMass. Junior goalkeeper Julie Podhrasky (Dallas, Texas) was untested in the first half while freshman Kelly Nigh (Seattle, Wash.) had to make just one save in the second half as Albany had only two shots in the game.
- Syracuse's Erica Mastrogiacomo scored the only goal of the game 38 minutes into the contest and goalkeeper Katie Karlander stopped six UMass shots as the Orangemen (2-0) beat the Minutewomen 1-0 Sept. 4 at Clifton Park, N.Y. Junior midfielder Katelyn Jones (Round Lake, N.Y.) led UMass with four of its nine shots. Syracuse finished with 12 shots, three of which goalkeeper Julie Podhrasky recorded saves on.
- UMass' nine goals against Albany last Friday tied a school record for the most goals against a Division I opponent set back on September 13, 1986 against Texas A&M.
- Kara Green ranks third in the record books with 98 career points and fifth with 33 career goals three games into her senior season. She is 26 points and 15 goals shy of career record holder Emma Kurowski (1996-99).
Volleyball
- The UMass volleyball squad began the 2000 campaign last weekend, when it traveled to Durham, N.H., to compete at the New Hampshire Tournament. The two-day tourney featured Eastern Michigan and Utah, in addition to host New Hampshire. The Minutewomen won two out of three matches, beating New Hampshire in a five game thriller (14-16, 15-11, 17-15, 13-15, 15-10) and Eastern Michigan in three games (15-3, 15-8, 15-5) . UMass lost to Utah in three games (8-15, 10-15, 2-15).
- UMass was lead by senior Rebecca Hasson (Riverside, Calif.), who averaged 3.91 kills and 1.82 digs per game during the weekend, including leading the team in two ocasions with 19 kills against New Hampshire and Eastern Michigan.
- UMass will compete in two more tournaments before embarking on the Atlantic 10 schedule on Sept. 22 at Dayton, travelling to both the Hofstra and Colorado State Tournaments on Sept. 8 and Sept. 15, respectively.
Men's Water Polo
- The No. 10 men's water polo team went 2-2 at the Navy Invitational on Sept. 2-3. On Saturday, the Minutemen defeated Slippery Rock (18-4) and M.I.T. (14-6). UMass fell to No. 18 Navy (3-2), and to the University of Puerto Rico (9-7), on Sunday.
- Junior Greg Trayer (Reading, Pa.) scored seven goals at Navy, with four versus M.I.T. and three versus Slippery Rock. Junior co-captain J.R. VanderWall (Rockford, Mich.) made a total of 18 saves in the four games, including eight versus Puerto Rico.
- The Minutemen return to action when they travel to Cambridge, Mass., to compete at the Harvard Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 9, and Sunday, Sept. 10.
- The Minutemen are coming off a season that saw them finish 29-6 overall, win its sixth Eastern Championship in seven years, defeat UC San Diego (12-9) to earn third place at the NCAA Championship and earn a No. 8 final national ranking. Head Coach Russ Yarworth, who was named Eastern Coach of the Year for the fourth time, enters his 14th year as head water polo coach at his alma mater.
- His team returns three starters and 14 letterwinners, including its core of two-meter players. Senior captain Brook O'Neill (Annapolis, Md.), juniors Mike Foley (Tustin, Calif.), Adam Moore (Sinking Spring, Pa.) and Trayer will lead the way for UMass at two-meters, while junior goalie VanderWall will anchor the UMass defense.
Football
- Junior quaterback Richard Lucero (Phoenix, Ariz.) was named the A-10 Player of the Week for his performance in a UMass win over William & Mary, Aug 31. Lucero completed 18-30 passes for 376 yards including two touchdown passes.
- All UMass football games can be heard live on the UMass Football Radio Network, including the flagship station WHMP 1400 AM (Northampton). Other network affiliate stations carrying the games include WUHN 1110 AM (Pittsfield), WGAM 1520 AM (Greenfield), WPNT 1600 AM (Springfield), WVNE 760 AM (Worcester) and WXKS 1430 AM (Boston).
- Head football coach Mark Whipple's weekly radio show "The Mark Whipple Show", is broadcast live on WHMP 1400 AM and WPNT 1600 AM from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. each Thursday from The Hanger.
