AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts Athletic Director Ian McCaw announced today that America East Conference Assistant Commissioner Matt Bourque has been selected as the Department's new Associate Athletic Director for Media and Broadcast Services. He will join the UMass staff on Aug. 31.
"We are thrilled to have Matt join our staff and lead our media relations team," McCaw said. "He has developed a tremendous network of media contacts not only in New England, but nationally. Not only does Matt have a strong media relations background, but his radio and television experience will benefit us as we endeavor to grow these properties in the coming years."
A member of the America East Conference staff since 1997, Bourque currently coordinates all communications efforts for the league's 21 Division I championship sports and serves as its chief spokesperson. In addition to his communication duties, he coordinates all aspects of the league's men's and women's basketball schedule, serves as co-chair of the America East Men's Basketball Championship Committee and is the chair of the league's basketball, baseball and soccer coaches' group meetings. Bourque also oversees the America East Television Network, which includes the hiring of talent and game scheduling.
Before joining the America East staff, Bourque spent six years (1991--97) as Sports Information Director at the University of Maine. He managed the athletic department's public and media relations efforts for 18 Division I programs, with specific emphasis on football and men's ice hockey. Bourque also acted as liason with the Black Bears' broadcast properties which annually produced as many as 15 television and 100 radio broadcasts.
"I am extremely excited to be part of the UMass team," Bourque said. "I have a tremendous amount of respect for Ian and his staff. I look forward to being part of a great institution and to help UMass continue to move the athletic program in a positive direction."
A 1989 graduate of the University of Maine (bachelor of arts in journalism), Bourque began his career in athletic administration at his alma mater, where he spent two years as assistant sports information director working with the school's football, basketball and baseball teams before taking over the office's top position.
Bourque replaces UMass Associate Athletic Director for Media Relations Nick Joos, who recently was named Director of Media Relations at the University of Minnesota.
