Ten UMass Athletes Earn A-10 Academic Honors

AMHERST, Mass. -- The Atlantic 10 Conference's spring all-academic teams include 10 student-athletes from the University of Massachusetts.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must have a grade point average of at least a 3.00 and be either a starter or key reserve on his/her team. Voting is conducted by the Atlantic 10 Conference's sports information directors.

UMass senior Hugh Reid (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was selected as the league's student-athlete of the year in outdoor track and field. Reid, the A-10 400-meter dash champion, owns a 3.71 grade point average in political science. He was also a member of the UMass 4 x 100-meter relay team at the 2001 A-10 outdoor meet, and was on the runner-up 4 x 400-meter relay unit.

Other UMass student-athletes who earned academic all-league honors include Amy Folta (Pittsfield, Mass.) and Sara Pragluski (Springfield, Mass.) in women's crew, Brandi Cross (Diamond Bar, Calif.), Jen Hadley (Bristol, Conn.) and Kaila Holtz (North Vancouver, British Columbia) in softball, Helena Horak (Westlake Village, Calif.) in women's tennis, Bill Greener (Walpole, Mass.) in men's tennis, Reid and teammate Erik Peterson (Seekonk, Mass.) in men's track and field and Carole LaPlante (Gardiner, Maine) in women's track and field.

In all, 33 Massachusetts student-athletes were named to the A-10's all-academic teams during the 2000-01 season.
