Katie O'Brien Named Female Scholar Athlete Of The Year

AMHERST, Mass. - Senior rower Katie O'Brien (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and graduate student sprinter Kwesi Frimpong-Boateng (Accra, Ghana) were named the 2003-2004 Scholar-Athletes at the UMass Varisty "M" Dinner at the Campus Center Auditorium on Friday night.

O'Brien rows in the fourth seat in UMass' nationally ranked varsity eight. She has been a part of four Atlantic 10 team championships, as well as five individual boat championships. The last three years she has been in the A-10 winning varsity eight. This year, she doubled, rowing in the third seat of A-10 champion quad, and as a freshman was in the winning second varsity eight. O'Brien was also a part of UMass' winning varsity eight at the Henley Regatta in England last summer. She could finish her collegiate career by rowing in the NCAA Championships, May 28-30, if UMass is selected.

Academically, O'Brien carries a 3.71 GPA in Management and was named to the Atlantic 10's All-Academic team last week. The Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association named her a National Scholar Athlete in 2003.

Frimpong-Boatengholds three school records in track. He won the 55 meters indoors at the IC4A Championship meet this winter, with a time of 6.31 seconds. He also holds the school record outdoors in the 100 meters (10.3 seconds) and 200 meters (20.9 seconds). He scored 55 points for the Minutemen track & field team at the Atlantic 10 indoor championships.

Academically, Frimpong-Boateng carries a 4.0 grade point average as a graduate student in microbiology. He is a member of the Atlantic 10's All-Academic team and an Academic All-American.
