Men's Lacrosse (9-1 / 2-1 ECAC)

Up Next: The 9-1 and sixth-ranked Minutemen will have their final multi-game week of the season with two contests this week. On Wednesday, April 16, the Minutemen head east to battle Harvard at 3:00 p.m. On Saturday, April 19, UMass plays one of its biggest rivals, as ECAC foe and No. 3 Georgetown comes calling to Richard F. Garber Field for a 1:00 p.m. game. In each of the past two seasons, the winner of the UMass-Georgetown game has gone on to claim the ECAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

A Look Back: Kevin Leveille (Delmar, N.Y.) scored two goals and two assists as seventh-ranked Massachusetts held off a spirited Yale comeback to claim a 12-10 victory over the No. 19 Bulldogs at Garber Field. Just a minute-and-a-half in, Leveille scored his first goal of the game with an assist from Gene Tundo (Orchard Park, N.Y.). Neil Lundberg (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) quickly gave the Minutemen a 2-0 lead just 38 seconds later with the first of his two goals to give the Minutemen a 2-0 lead just two minutes into the game. The score remained the same until just 27 seconds remained when Lundberg tallied his second goal for a 3-0 advantage. However, Yale cut into the UMass lead on goals by Daniel Brillman and Seth Goldberg, both coming in the final 14 seconds to trim the UMass cushion to 3-2 after one quarter.

Yale tied the game at 3-3 on a Michael Scaglione goal at the 10:03 mark, but the Minutemen went on a 4-0 run, spanning almost eight minutes to take a 7-3 lead. Four different Minutemen scored in the run that was stopped when Scaglione scored his second goal of the game with just 42 seconds left before halftime. But Leveille tallied his second goal of the half with just two seconds left before halftime to give the Minutemen an 8-4 halftime advantage.

Yale scored the first four goals of the second half to tie the game at 8-8, including two by Scott Kenworthy, but Jeff Zywicki (Napean, Ontario) notched his second marker of the contest with 44 seconds left in the third quarter to give the Minutemen the lead for good. Zywicki increased the UMass margin to 10-8 with his 30th goal of the season, 35 seconds into the fourth quarter. Yale twice cut the deficit to one goal, the last time at 11-10, but Kevin Glenz (Merrick, N.Y.) scored at the 7:08 mark to give the Minutemen a 12-10 lead. UMass then ran out the final minutes, aided by two Yale penalties in the last three minutes of the game to claim its ninth victory of the season.

With his four points (2 g, 2 a) against Yale, Leveille moved into 12th place on the school's goals scored list with 90, and 14th on UMass' career points chart with 142 ... Steven Byrnes (Mahopac, N.Y.) tallied his first career goal in UMass' 12-10 win over Yale... Seven different Minutemen scored goals against Yale ... Dane Collins (Ridley Park, Pa.) controlled the face-off circle for the Minutemen, winning 14-of-21 attempts ... Zywicki scored his fourth hat trick of the season, and recorded a point in his 20th straight game ... Bill Schell (Mahopac, N.Y.) has made at least 10 saves in five straight games and in eight of the 10 games so far this year ...Chris Fiore (Freeport, N.Y.) needs two points for 100 in his career ... Zywicki entered the weekend third in the country in scoring, and is trying to become the second UMass player in the last 10 years to tally 50 points in a year. Marc Morley had 52 points last season.

Softball (23-10 / 6-0 Atlantic 10)

Up Next:

The University of Massachusetts softball team (23-10, 6-0) will play four games this week, three of which will be on the road. The Minutewomen will travel to Storrs, Conn., on Tuesday for a 3:30 p.m. game with Connecticut. Then, UMass will host Boston College on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. This weekend, UMass travels to Dayton, Ohio, for a 1 p.m. doubleheader with the Flyers on Saturday.

A Look Back:

Massachusetts ran its winning streak to 14 games by posting four wins at home last week. The Minutewomen were supposed to play Central Connecticut State to start the week off, but that was cancelled due to snow. It will be made up on May 2 at 4:00 p.m.

The University of Massachusetts softball team won two games over Harvard in five innings Thursday afternoon at the UMass Softball Complex, 13-0 and 8-0. In game one, the Minutewomen used a 10-run second inning to cruise to a 13-0 five-inning win. Senior pitcher Kaila Holtz (North Vancouver, British Columbia) had a pair of two-run doubles in the first and second inning as part of her three-hit, four-RBI game. On the mound, she went 3.0 innings, while giving up a hit and striking out four en route to her 10th win of the season.

In game two, Harvard loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the third inning, but UMass junior catcher Jamie Cahalan (Mesa, Ariz.) picked off Erin Halpenny at third to keep the game scoreless. UMass then exploded for five runs in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by a grand slam by Holtz to left. Kelli Arnold (Kalama, Wash.) gave up four hits and three walks, while fanning six. She is now 9-4 this year. UMass then posted a pair of shutouts over Rhode Island, 8-0 and 5-0, on Sunday. Arnold threw her first career no-hitter in game two, while Holtz yielded just one hit in the first game.

In the first game, UMass scored an unearned run in the first inning to take an early lead. UMass increased its lead to 2-0 in the third when senior Brandi Cross (Diamond Bar, Calif.) homered to right-center field.

Franke doubled to right-center field in the bottom of the fourth inning scoring senior Anna Perey (Chino Valley, Ariz.) to put the Minutewomen up 3-0 and then they exploded for five runs in the sixth to end the game early.

Holtz, who took a no-hitter into the fifth inning, settled for the one-hit shutout. She did not walk a batter and struck out nine.

Once again, UMass jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning of game two. Cross hit her 11th home run of the season, a mamouth shot that went over the right field fair pole. UMass then added another run in the bottom of the second inning when sophomore Denise Denis (Middle Grove, N.Y.) singled to center, scoring KC Budrewicz (Buckland, Mass.). The Minutewomen then added another solo run in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead on a sacrifice fly to center by Hilary Puglia (Stoneham, Mass.).

UMass added two more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth setting up the stage for Arnold's dramatics in the seventh. She retired the Rams in order to secure her first career no-hitter. Arnold walked two batters, struck out nine and allowed two other batters reached via errors.

Check This Out: In this week's A-10 awards, Arnold picked up pitcher of the week accolades ... With two more home runs this week, Cross has tied Scooter Wheeler for first place all-time with 26 round-trippers ... With her 11 home runs this season, Cross has also hit the most in a UMass single-season ... UMass has 24 home runs already this season. It had 20 for the entire 2002 campaign which was a school record ... Overall, the Minutewomen are 58-3 in the friendly confines of the UMass Softball Complex and have won 46 straight games in Amherst ... UMass has also win 14 straight games overall and its last 52 regular season A-10 contests.

Baseball (11-9 / 6-3 Atlantic 10)

Up Next: The Minutemen (11-9 overall, 6-3 Atlantic 10) return to action on Tuesday, April 15, when they play host to Connecticut (16-14) in a 3:00 p.m. game at Earl Lorden Field. UMass then heads to Holy Cross (8-16) for a make-up game at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 17. The Minutemen conclude the week when they play host to Rhode Island (14-17, 8-4 Atlantic 10) in a three-game series for first place in the Atlantic 10 East Division. UMass will face the Rams in a doubleheader at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 19, and a single game at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 20.

A Look Back: UMass extended its current winning streak to seven games with a 4-0 record over the last week, including a 3-0 mark in Atlantic 10 play. The Minutemen opened the week with a 15-9 home victory over Fairfield on Thursday, April 10. UMass then swept a three-game series at Fordham over the weekend, winning by scores of 2-1, 4-3 and 10-8. The Minutemen now have their longest winning streak since late in the 2001 season, when they recorded eight straight victories.

Chown Has Another Big Game: Junior righthanded pitcher Eric Chown (Fall River, Mass.) had another outstanding performance last week against Fordham. He threw a five-hit complete game against the Rams on Sunday, allowing only one run while striking out five in the 2-1 victory. The win was Chown's third straight, as he now stands 3-0 with a 3.79 earned run average against Atlantic 10 Conference foes. Overall this season, Chown now has a 3-2 record with a 6.83 earned run average and 25 strikeouts in 27-1/3 innings. He leads the team in strikeouts and is tied for the team lead in victories.

Morgan Has Big Week At The Plate: Senior designated hitter Chris Morgan (Cranston, R.I.) had four outstanding games for UMass over the last week. In the victory over Fairfield, Morgan went four for five with three doubles and two runs batted in, to tie the school single game record for doubles. He followed that up by going four for nine with a double, a homer and three runs batted in during the three-game series at Fordham. Morgan, who had at least one hit in each game last week, is now batting .365 on the season with three homers, nine doubles and 16 runs batted in, ranking first or second on the team in each of those categories.

The Road Warriors: UMass is currently tied for first place in the Atlantic 10 East Division, despite playing all nine of its conference games so far this season on the road. Due to the weather, the Minutemen have only played three home games in 2003, going 3-0. UMass will play three of its four remaining Atlantic 10 series at Earl Lorden Field.

Women's Lacrosse (7-5 / 3-1 Atlantic 10)

Up Next: The women's lacrosse team will hit the road for two Atlantic 10 games this week. The Minutewomen will first take on Duquesne on Friday, April 18 at 7:00 p.m., and then make the trip to St. Bonaventure for a 12:00 p.m. game on Sunday, April 20.

Last Time Out: Three Minutewomen tallied multiple goals as the University of Massachusetts women's lacrosse team defeated Richmond, 11-6, last Sunday at Garber Field.

Richmond got on the board first in the contest, scoring in the first minute of play when Katie Dolan was able to find the back of the net at the 29:12 mark. That was the last time the Spiders were in the lead as UMass went on a 7-2 scoring run to take a 7-3 lead into half time. Senior Jada Emery (Princeton, N.J.) scored two of Massachusetts' seven goals in the first half and also assisted junior Hope Zelinger's (Ellicott City, Md.) goal at the 23:04 mark.

The Spiders came out quick in the second half, scoring twice to cut Richmond's deficit to 7-5 with 14:35 remaining in the game. Sophomore Maura McGarrity (Chester Springs, Pa.) answered the Spiders' scoring run with a goal of her own, putting UMass up 8-5 with 9:15 remaining. Seniors Lydia Robinson (Summit, N.J.) and Kelli Kurtz (Schwenksville, Pa.) added two more goals to give the Minutewomen a 10-5 edge before UR's Polly Purcell scored her second goal of the game with 1:43 left in the second half. Robinson put an end to Richmond's chances, tallying her third goal of the game with 00:00.2 seconds left on the clock to give UMass an 11-6 victory over its conference opponent.

Robinson and Emery and led all scorers with three goals for the Minutewomen. Kurtz added two goals and McGarrity, senior Leslie Pollock (Watervliet, N.Y.) and Zelinger each recorded one goal.

In the cage for UMass, senior Cyndi Doyle (Bridgewater, Vt.) recorded 10 saves to help preserve the UMass victory.

Check This Out: Heading into last week's games goaltender Cyndi Doyle was first in the Atlantic 10 with a 7.30 GAA against conference opponents ... Lydia Robinson, who has tallied a point in all 12 games, leads UMass with 31 points on 27 goals and four assists ... In Atlantic 10 play, UMass is outshooting its opponents, 122-76, and is outscoring it's A-10 competitors, 54-30.

Women's Tennis ( 6-12/ 3-1 Atlantic 10)

Up Next: Massachusetts heads to the 2003 Atlantic 10 Championships in College Park, Md., April 17-19. This year's 21st annual league meet will be held at the Tennis Center at College Park. Last year, the Minutewomen placed seventh in the league meet, as Richmond claimed the team title.

A Look Back:UMass split its conference matches last weekend, falling to Temple, 4-3, on Friday and defeating George Washington, 6-1, on Saturday. The Minutewomen then dropped their final regular-season match at Qunnipiac, Monday, 4-3. The Minutewomen earned their 6-1 victory over GW when they clinched the doubles point after winning two of the three matches and then won five out of the six singles matches. Stephanie Price (Columbia, Mo.) and Jafra Depontes (Kaliua-Kona, Hawaii) defeated Tracy Wei and Lindy First, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles. Sasha Edelstein (Haifa, Israel) and Dorothy Iwanowicz (Hilton Head, S.C.) clinched the point for UMass when they defeated Nazli Gencsoy and Sevla Gonca, 8-5.

In singles, the Minutewomen claimed victories in all but one match. Playing at No. 1 singles, Price defeated Nazli Gencsoy, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6. Depontes topped First, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 2 singles and Edelstein defeated Natasha Bode, 6-2, 6-2. Massachusetts had to battle for victories at No. 5 and No. 6 singles when Iwanowicz came back fto beat Sam Fisher, 4-6, 6-1, 7-5, and Susan Hyams (Cincinnati, Ohio) defeated Bartell, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. On Friday, the Owls clinched the win with three victories in the doubles competition, earning Temple the point to go ahead 4-3 over the Minutewomen. Depontes and Price fell to Danira Penic and Ana Maslesa, 9-8, in a close match that had to go to a tie breaker at No. 1 doubles. UMass posted a win at No. 2 doubles when Edelstein and Iwanowicz defeated Mia Marovic and Lauren Verrall, 8-2, but the Minutewomen lost at No. 3 doubles when Hyams and Camilla Knight (Devon, England) fell to Rene Deyzel and Laura Seiverling, 8-5.

The Minutewomen won three out of the six singles matches, posting victories at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles, to earn their three points in the match. Edelstein defeated Deyzel, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 4 spot while Iwanowicz downed Verrall, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 singles and Hyams defeated Seiverling, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 6 singles.

Check This Out: Sasha Edelstein posted four victories last weekend against Temple and George Washington. Edelstein won both of her singles matches with ease, dropping just four games between the two matches. In doubles, Edelstein and Dorothy Iwanowicz earned victories over both Temple and GW, topping the Owls, 8-2, and defeating GW, 8-5.

Up Next: Seven-time defending Atlantic 10 champion UMass returns to action on Saturday, April 19, with a meet against host-Columbia, Navy and Northeastern in New York City. It's the final tune-up for the Minutewomen prior to the April 26 A-10 Championships.

Last Time Out: The University of Massachusetts varsity eight turned in a season-best time in the prelims and went on to finish second to West Virginia in the grand final at the Knecht Cup last Sunday on the Copper River in Camden, N.J. The Minutewomen recorded a time of 6:54.7 in Sunday's final to finish second to West Virginia, which won the race in 6:51.5. UMass' A-10 rival, Fordham, finished third in 6:55.2. Massachusetts' second varsity eight boat finished third in its grand final race, behind Wisconsin and Boston College, in 7:23.2. UMass' second novice eight (8:10.3) also earned the bronze medal behind first-place West Virginia and Saint Joseph's. Massachusetts finished first and fourth in the varsity quad grand final, and recorded a fifth-place finish in the varsity pairs.

Women's Outdoor Track & Field

Up Next: The UMass women's outdoor track and field team will compete in two meets this week, with part of the squad participating in a pentathlon competition at Holy Cross, April 16-17, and the rest of the team traveling to Storrs, Conn., to face UConn, URI, Brown, Southern Connecticut State, Dartmouth and Albany on April 18.

Last Time Out: The University of Massachusetts women's track and field team finished fifth at the Brown Invitational in Providence, R.I. on Saturday. Brown, the host school, won the meet with 127 points while Rhode Island was second with 102 points and Syracuse was third with 98.50 points. UMass finished with 57 total points. The Minutewomen were led by junior Chante Soares' (New Bedford, Mass.) first-place finish in the long jump. The junior hit the 18- 8 mark to earn 10 points for UMass. Freshman Ashley Creel (Sandwich, Mass.), sophomore Christina Huff (Springfield, Mass.) and junior Brandy Green (Fitchburg, Mass.) also performed well for the Minutewomen, finishing second in their respective events. Huff was second in the 100-meter dash at 12.74, while Creel placed second in the high jump when she cleared the 5-6 mark and Green claimed the silver in the pole vault when she was able to clear 11-6 1/4.

Check This Out: Soares has won the long jump competition in each of the team's two outdoor meets. At the SCSU Invitational she claimed gold when she hit the 18- 2 1/2 mark. This past weekend she bettered her distance when she recorded a jump of 18- 8 at the Brown Invitational.

Men's Outdoor Track & Field

Up Next: The UMass men's outdoor track and field team will head to Storrs., Conn., on Saturday, April 19, to face UConn, Brown, Dartmouth and SUNY-Albany in a five-way meet beginning at 10 a.m. The Minutemen will also send their decathlon entrants to Holy Cross for a multi-event competition, April 16-17.

Last Time Out: Massachusetts tallied 42 points to finish eighth in the Brown Invitational, April 12. Host-Brown won the meet with 130 points. UMass scored 23 of its points on the day in the field events. Sophomore Mike Carr (Rehoboth, Mass.) turned in the best finish of the meet by a Minuteman, as he finished second in the javelin with a throw of 176-11, while sophomore teammate Mike Antonio (Westboro, Mass.) was fourth in the event with a mark of 175-5. Another sophomore, Derek Swart (Southboro, Mass.), placed third in the long jump for UMass with a leap of 21-1 1/4, and senior Ken Scheider (Woodridge, N.J.) was fourth in the pole vault with a 15-0 mark.

Leading the way for the Minutemen on the track was true freshman Chris Brayley (Chicopee, Mass.), who scored in a pair of events for UMass for the second consecutive week. He finished fifth in both the 100- (11.38) and 200- (22.65) meter races. Junior John O'Neil (North Reading, Mass.) was third in the 400-meter hurdles in 55.71.

Check This Out: UMass senior Kwesi Frimpong-Boateng (Accra, Ghana) owns the A-10's top mark in the 100-meter dash (10.62), while teammate Scheider has the league's top pole vault (15-0) and Eric Uliano (Haverhill, Mass.) has the league's second-best shot put mark (53-11 1/4).
