A LOOK BACK: * Behind a complete game by sophomore pitcher Jenna Busa (Lexington, Mass.), the University of Massachusetts softball team (5-7) defeated 23rd-ranked Notre Dame (10-6), 4-2, at the FAU Worth Invitational. Busa scattered eight hits over seven innings as she improved to 3-4 this year. She allowed one walk and struck out two batters. Massachusetts struck first in the bottom of the third inning by scoring a pair of runs on just one hit. The Minutewomen loaded the bases with one out on a single by senior Aisha Franke (Philadelphia, Pa.), a walk to sophomore Katie Jo Kelley (Rainier, Ore.) and a Notre Dame error on a bunt by freshman Candice Molinari (Glendora, Calif.) which allowed her to reach base. A walk by senior KC Budrewicz (Buckland, Mass.) drove in the first run of the game and then senior Jamie Cahalan (Mesa, Ariz.) was hit by a pitch to give UMass a 2-0 lead. In the top of the fourth, the Irish attempted to cut into the UMass lead, but Meagan Ruthrauff was gunned down at the plate by Franke in center field trying to score from second base on a single by Mallorie Lenn. Cahalan blocked the plate and never allowed Ruthrauff to touch it. The Minutewomen then added two insurance runs in the bottom of fourth to take a 4-0 lead. Sophomore Kristi Stefanoni (Columbus, N.J.) scored on a wild pitch after she led off with a walk and stole second and third bases. Franke, who also walked, scored one batter later on a fielders choice by junior Hilary Puglia (Stoneham, Mass.). Those runs for UMass turned out to be important as Stephanie Brown got Notre Dame on the board in the top of the sixth with a one-out RBI single to right. Two batters later, she was driven home on a two-out double by Nicole Wicks to the warning track in left-center field. Busa got out the jam without any further damage.
The University of Massachusetts softball team (5-8) fell to Florida Atlantic University (18-9), 1-0, in the FAU Worth Invitational. The UMass offense was shut down for the second time in a week by FAU pitcher Amanda Morin. She held the Minutewomen to four hits and did not walk a batter in her complete-game shutout. Morin posted seven strikeouts. UMass junior pitcher Kelli Arnold (Kalama, Wash.) was equally as impressive. She gave up just one run in six innings while scattering seven hits and three walks. She fanned three. UMass lost to FAU, 4-1, Feb. 28, in the NFCA Leadoff Classic.
Sophomore Katie Jo Kelley hit a three-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning as UMass (6-8) came back to defeat North Carolina (12-9), 4-3, in the FAU Worth Invitational. UMass trailed 3-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning when Kelley blasted a game-winning three-run home run over the left-center field fence. It was her fourth round-tripper of the season. Both junior Hilary Puglia (Stoneham, Mass.) and freshman Candice Molinari (Glendora, Calif.) had led off the inning with singles in front of Kelley. North Carolina took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Jessica Robinson gave the Tar Heels the lead with a two-out, two-run double into the left-center field gap. The Minutewomen got one of the runs back in the bottom of the inning. Puglia led off the frame with a double and then Molinari followed with an infield single. After Kelley struck out, senior Jamie Cahalan (Mesa, Ariz.) worked a walk to load the bases for senior KC Budrewicz (Buckland, Mass.). UNC pitcher Crystal Cox then settled down and recorded the final two outs. The game remained 2-1 until UNC added an unearned run in the top of the seventh to take the two-run lead. UMass junior pitcher Kelli Arnold (Kalama, Wash.) turned in a gutsy performance. She went the distance throwing 105 pitches. Arnold gave up 10 hits and two earned runs while walking three. She struck out four batters. UMass batters struck out 11 times and stranded eight runners on base.
In game two against Florida International, junior Hilary Puglia (Stoneham, Mass.) and freshman Candice Molinari (Glendora, Calif.) led off the game with a walk and a single, but the Minutewomen were unable to bring them home. FIU then plated the games' first run in the bottom of the inning. Jennifer Owens hit a RBI single to center field. The Golden Panthers had a chance for more as they loaded the bases with one out, but sophomore pitcher Jenna Busa (Lexington, Mass.) was able to get a double play to get out of the jam. FIU, however, was able to push two more runs across of Busa in the bottom of the third to take a 3-1 lead. Jennifer Powell had a RBI double and Owens added a RBI single for the Golden Panthers.

Five unanswered goals gave Umass an 8-1 lead that it would not relinquish in men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at a rain-soaked Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium in Stony Brook, N.Y. UMass jumped on top of the Seawolves immediately as Neil Lundberg tallied the first of his two goals of the game just 28 seconds into the contest. LAST WEEK: Mar. 7 at Rider W 6-5 at Rider W 15-2
A LOOK BACK: The University of Massachusetts baseball team (2-0) opened the 2004 season by sweeping a non-conference double header with a pair of wins over Rider (1-5) at Richard F. Daly field winning the first game 6-5 and the second game 15-2. UMass head coach Mike Stone picked up career win No. 500 with the Game 1 decision to pad a career total which ranks him as the winningest active Division I head coach in New England. In game 1, the Minutemen got on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning as sophomore catcher Frank Curreri (Weymouth, Mass.) knocked a two-out RBI single to center field scoring senior second baseman Cullan Maumus (New Orleans, La.), who had doubled earlier in the inning. UMass would plate a run in both the second and third innings, using RBI doubles from junior outfielder Derrick Durepo (Ware, Mass.) and senior captain first baseman Matt Reynolds (South Boston, Mass.) to light the scoreboard, staking the Minutemen a 3-0 lead. But Rider would come back with a run in its half of the third and the fourth to make it 3-2, a score which would hold until the seventh frame. A wild pitch allowed senior designated hitter Sean Sarno (Stoneham, Mass.) to score, increasing the UMass lead to 4-2 in the top of the seventh. Rider would come up with a couple of hits and a run in its half of the seventh to close the gap to one, 4-3, but UMass tallied a run in each of the last three innings to hold on to the win. Curreri got his second RBI of the afternoon, and what proved to be the game-winner, as he lifted an RBI single to center field. He finished the day 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and two walks. Senior righthanded pitcher Eric Chown (Fall River, Mass.) got the opening day win (1-0) scattering 10 hits over seven innings while striking out six and allowing just three runs, all earned. Sophomore lefty Scott Ratliff (Helendale, Calif.) closed out the last two innings totaling three strikeouts and stranding the tying run on second base for his first save of the season.
In the second game, UMass was all over Broncs starter Mike Rakoczy as the Minutemen batted around and scored seven runs in the first inning. While only five of the runs were earned, an RBI-double from junior outfielder Jason Twomley (Fitchburg, Mass.), a two-run double from senior third baseman Adam Stojanowski (West Roxbury, Mass.) and an RBI double from Durepo, were all attributed to the pitching, and knocked Rakoczy out of the game. Meanwhile, sophomore righthander Matt Torra (Pittsfield, Mass.) went six innings for the win (1-0), allowing just four hits and facing the minimum nine batters through the first three innings. The only blemish on Torra's day came in the bottom of the sixth as senior Scott Rich hit a two-out, two-run home run to right field. Junior Mike Crane (Braintree, Mass.) closed the door with a 1-2-3 seventh to wrap up the victory. Offensively, Reynolds led the hit parade with a pair, including a two-run homer to left center in the fifth and four RBI. Twomley added two hits, including a double, while Stojanowski tallied three hits, all doubles to go along with three RBI and three runs scored. Durepo had four hits and three RBI out of the nine spot in the line up as the Minutemen totaled 18 hits, their highest since an 18-hit barrage against Fairfield on April 10, 2003. With the wins, UMass starts the year 2-0 for the first time since 1993 and looks for its first 3-0 beginning to a season since 1988. That year, the first under the direction of Mike Stone, the Minutemen started off 4-0. UMass baseball returns to action with a trio of games at South Florida this weekend. The series kicks off Friday night with a 7:00 p.m. game at Red McEwen Field in Tampa, Fla.

A LOOK BACK: * The University of Massachusetts women's lacrosse team (1-2, 0-0 A-10) fell to Harvard (1-0) in overtime on its home turf on Saturday, March 6, 9-8. The Minutewomen took a 7-2 lead into halftime but could only come up with one more tally in the second half, as Harvard scored six and then won the game in the extra frame. Massachusetts jumped out to an early lead as senior midfielder Tracey Drown (Nashua, N.H.) scored the first of the game just 33 seconds into the match. Junior midfielder Maura McGarrity (Chester Springs, Pa.) made it a 2-0 UMass edge just 1:24 later. Sophomore attacher Lindsay Cassell (Weston, Mass.) then hit the back of the net twice, to make it a 4-0 Massachusetts lead. Catherine Sproul then put Harvard on the board with a tally at the 18:11 mark. Freshman midfielder Brianna Bubeck (Selkirk, N.Y.) then recorded her first two career goals, with a McGarrity tally in between, to make the score 7-1, Minutewomen. Harvard made it 7-2 going into halftime with a goal by Elaine Belitsos. The second half saw the Crimson turn things around and go on a 3-0 run before sophomore Kerri Connerty (Nashua, N.H.) ended it with her fifth goal of the season. That was all the scoring Massachusetts would get, as Harvard scored three more including the game-tying goal by Belitsos with 1:03 left to play. Liz Gamble hit the back of the net in overtime to take the win for Harvard. Redshirt freshman Lauren McCarthy (Derry, N.H.) surrendered 9 goals, while making 18 saves, to go to 1-2 on the season. Her counterpart, freshman Kathryn Tylander, made 14 saves while giving up eight goals for the Crimson.
On Thursday, March 3, UMass fell to Boston University, 12-9. Senior attacker Hope Zelinger (Ellicott City, Md.) led a second-half charge, logging her second consecutive four-goal game, but UMass could not overtake the Terriers. Massachusetts jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, as sophomore Kerri Connerty (Nashua, N.H.) scored on two straight free position shots. Boston University then scored six consecutive goals to make it a 6-2 UMass deficit, early in the second half. Zelinger ended the scoring drought as she hit the back of the net 4:51 into the second half. BU then reeled off three more goals, to make it a 9-3 Terrier edge. Two more Zelinger goals and another Boston University goal made the score 10-5 with 16:50 left to play. Senior captain Tracey Drown (Nashua, N.H.) scored her first and second goals of the season within 48 seconds of each other to cut the BU lead to three. Zelinger's fourth of the game with 7:29 left and another Drown goal with 4:04 left to play cut the Terriers' lead to one, at 10-9. That is as close as the Minutewomen would come, however, as the Terriers scored the final two goals to put the game away. Boston University was led by sophomore attacker Mary Beth Miller, who scored four goals on five shots. Fellow sophomores Lindsay Lewis and Kaitlyn Cuneo each contributed three-goal efforts. Lewis' third goal of the game proved to be the game-winner. Redshirt freshman Lauren McCarthy (Derry, N.H.) surrendered 12 goals, while making 12 saves, to go to 1-1 on the season. Her counterpart, junior Anne Sheridan, made 10 saves while giving up nine goals for the Terriers.
