Men's Gymnastics
* Men's Gymnastics took second place in a tri-meet at California-Santa Barbara with California Berkeley on Saturday, Feb. 3. Cal-Berkeley took first place with 213.850 points, ahead of the Minutemen (204.500), and the host Gauchos (195.450). UMass is now 3-1 on the year.
* UMass returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 10, as it participates in the Winter Nationals at Las Vegas, Nev.
Women's Gymnastics
* Women's Gymnastics fell to 23rd-ranked West Virginia, 191.925-194.400, on Friday, Feb. 2. The loss drops the Minuewomen to 2-4 on the season.
* Sophomore Katie Teft (Grand Rapids, Mich.) tied for first on the uneven bars with a 9.925, while senior Tracy Chew (Silver Spring, Md.) earned a tie for first place on the vault with a career-high 9.775. Fellow senior Mary Moore (Coral Springs, Fla.) took second place on the balance beam as she tied a career-high with a score of 9.90. Sophomore Jen Gendron (Shrewsbury, Mass.) tied for third on the beam with a 9.825, also a career-high.
* UMass is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 10, as they travel to Durham, N.H. to take on rival New Hampshire at 1:00 p.m.
Men's Swimming
* The men's swimming and diving team won nine of the 13 events to defeat Atlantic 10 foe Fordham by a score of 153-87, on Saturday, Feb. 3, in the Bronx, N.Y. With the win, the Minutemen improve to 10-4 on the season.
* Freshman diver Logan Alomar (Silver Spring, Md.) placed first in both diving events with a score of 265.2 in the one-meter and a 268.5 in the three-meter. Senior Chris Arsenault (Peabody, Mass.) won the 200 IM with a time of 1:54.99.
* Other UMass individual winners included senior Billy Brown (Fullerton, Calif.) in the 200 breast (2:09.64), sophomore Tommy Keane (Melrose, Mass.) in the 500 free (4:50.85), sophomore Chad Arnold (Mohnton, Pa.) in the 200 free (1:48.81) and sophomore Scott Peterson (Martinez, Calif.) in the 1000 free (10:24.95).
* UMass took both relay events with the 400 medley relay team of Arsenault, Brown, senior Joe Martin (Naugatuck, Conn.) and senior Mike Sabina (Avon, Mass.) winning with a time of 3:31.65, and the 400 free relay team of junior Ryan Fisher (Santa Barbara, Calif.), Sabina, Arnold and Arsenault winning the event with a time of 3:11.25.
* The Minutemen return to the pool on Friday, Feb. 9, and Saturday, Feb. 10, when they compete at the UConn Husky Invitational. The Atlantic 10 Championships are slated for Feb. 15-17, in Buffalo, N.Y.
Women's Swimming
* The women's swimming and diving team won nine of the 13 events as it defeated Atlantic 10 foe Fordham by a score of 143.5-98.5, on Saturday, Feb. 3, in the Bronx, N.Y. The Minutewomen are now 10-3 on the season, tying the school record for wins with the 1996-97 team that also went 10-3.
* Sophomore diver Kate Allery (South Hadley, Mass.) won both diving events with a score of 245.25 in the one-meter and a 253.05 in the three-meter.
* The 400 medley relay team of freshman Lauren Rowell (Hamburg, N.Y.), freshman Christen Dexter (Centerville, Mass.), junior Andrea Kazanjian (Troy, N.Y.) and junior Anne Dettloff (Barrington, Ill.) won the event with a team season top time of 4:01.22. The 400 free relay team of freshman Shauna Nielsen (Huntington Beach, Calif.), sophomore Lizzy Boyle (Darien, Conn.), sophomore Molly Buckley (Taunton, Mass.) and Dettloff finished the sweep of the relay events with a time of 3:41.05.
* Other UMass individual winners included Dettloff in the 200 free (1:57.10), Kazanjian in the 50 free (24.85), Nielsen in the 1000 free (10:53.90), Dexter in the 200 breast (2:23.59) and freshman Diana Alberti (Wantagh, N.Y.) in the 200 fly (2:11.83).
* The Minutewomen return to the pool on Friday, Feb. 9, and Saturday, Feb. 10, when they compete at the UConn Husky Invitational. The Atlantic 10 Championships are slated for Feb. 15-17, in Buffalo, N.Y.
Women's Track
* The women's indoor track & field team competed at the Rhode Island Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 3, placing fourth out of eight teams. The Minutewomen tallied 73 points, placing behind Brown (205), URI (111.50) and Boston College (106).
* Junior Rhianna DaCruz (Pawtucket, R.I.) and freshman Brandy Green (Fitchburg, Mass.) both had jumps of 11'00.75" to place second and third in the pole vault. Senior Chrystal Murphy (Trenton, N.J.) placed second in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 8.40.
* Senior Megan McCormick (State College, Pa.) finished third in the mile run with a time of 4:58.19, while Carole LaPlante (Gardiner, Maine) ranked third in the shot put with a throw of 40'02.75".
* The Minutewomen return to action on Saturday, Feb. 10, when they travel to Boston to compete at the Valentine Invitational, at 10:00 a.m.
Men's Track
* The men's indoor track & field team competed at the Rhode Island Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 3, finishing third out of nine teams. The Minutemen earned 93.50 points behind URI (207) and Brown (126.50).
* Freshman David Mullert (Rehoboth, Mass.) won the mile run with a time of 4:21.43, while junior Sal Nastasi (Merrich, N.Y.) finished second with a time of 4:21.52. The 4 x 400 and 4 x 800 meter relay teams both placed second.
* Senior Mike Harris (Brooklyn, N.Y.) placed third in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.84 and junior Brian Cronin (Weymouth, Mass.) also placed third in the 1,000 meter run with a season team fastest time of 2:32.45. Freshman Jeff Jason (New Bedford, Mass.) ranked third in the shot put with a throw of 49'06.50".
* The Minutemen return to action on Saturday, Feb. 10, when they travel to Boston to compete at the Valentine Invitational, at 11:00 a.m.
Softball
* Softball opens its season this weekend, Feb. 9-11, in Phoenix, Ariz. at the Fiesta Bowl Tournament. The Minutewomen will face Missouri, UNLV, Oregon, LSU and Georgia in the three-day tournament.
* Last season, UMass went 35-23, won its sixth straight Atlantic 10 Tournament championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the tenth time in the programs' history. Freshman first baseman Brandi Cross (Diamond Bar, Calif.) became the first softball player in UMass history to earn third-team Louisville Slugger All-American honors.
* The Minutewomen play host to Vermont on March 29 at 2:00 p.m. in their first home game of the season at the UMass Softball Complex.
Women's Water Polo
* The women's water polo team kicks off the 2001 season with a trip to the Princeton Invitational. On Saturday, Feb. 10, the Minutewomen will take on Michigan at 1:20 p.m. and Villanova at 7:20 p.m., while they take on UC Santa Cruz at 1:00 p.m., on Sunday, Feb. 11.
* Last year, the Minutewomen finished with a 31-8 overall record and earned a fifth place finish out of 16 teams at the Collegiate National Championship, which is the highest finish in school history. First year head coach Donna Heinel, who served as the assistant coach last season, and has been the swimming assistant coach for three years, has 12 returning letterwinners with big game experience and a talented freshman class. Heinel has a team with a strong defense and a dynamic offense that will consistently pressure the opponents defense making this year's team a solid all-around team.
