Amherst, Mass. -- University of Massachusetts Director of Athletics Ian McCaw announced today that his department will be participating in a onetime budget reduction in response to the current fiscal crisis facing the Commonwealth.
"Our budget situation is not unique in college athletics at this time," said McCaw. "We do not expect these reductions to impact the quality of either the sports programs or the student-athlete experience at UMass. We will continue to move the program forward, despite the cutbacks."
In accordance with Massachusetts Gov. W. Mitt Romney's call to "reduce administrative expenses," McCaw indicated that the department would implement a temporary hiring freeze, eliminate nonessential travel and identify other administrative areas where reductions can be made.
"We have been given a target number from Chancellor Lombardi and will be reviewing our budget over the next several days to identify areas to be reduced," said McCaw.
The list of reductions within the athletic department will be forwarded to the Chancellor's office next week.
