UMASS WEEKLY SPORTS NOTEBOOK...
WOMEN'S SWIMMING
*The women's swimming & diving team finished first out of three teams at the Rhode Island Invitational last weekend. UMass won all four relay events and junior Anne Dettloff (Barrington, Ill.) won three individual events as the team earned 429 points to place ahead of La Salle (242) and event host Rhode Island (191).
*Dettloff earned first-place finishes in the 200 (1:56.99), 500 (5:13.62) and 1000 free (10:36.77). Junior Becky Hunnewell (Sandwich, Mass.) won the 100 (1:00.57) and 200 (2:09.31) back, while freshman Christen Dexter (Centerville, Mass.) won the 100 (1:08.83) and 200 (2:22.87) breast. Dexter's 200 breast time was just behind her school-record time of 2:22.20.
*Other UMass individual winners included freshman Lauren Rowell (Hamburg, N.Y.) in the 200 IM with a season personal best time of 2:13.39 and sophomore Molly Buckley (Taunton, Mass.) in the 50 free with a time of 25.17.
*The 400 medley relay team of sophomore Stacy Tam (Boxboro, Mass.), sophomore Lauren Bulkeley (Virginia Beach, Va.), senior Sharyn Harrison (Naugatuck, Conn.) and junior Becca Bell (Greenfield, Mass.) placed first with a time of 4:03.15, while the 200 free relay team of sophomore Lizzy Boyle (Darien, Conn.), Buckley, junior Andrea Kazanjian (Troy, N.Y.) and Dettloff won with a time of 1:39.78. UMass completed the sweep of the relay events with wins from the 200 medley relay team of Hunnewell, Dexter, Kazanjian and Buckley with a time of 1:52.83, and the 400 free relay team of Hunnewell, Boyle, freshman Shauna Nielsen (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Dettloff with a time of 3:42.06. *Sophomore Kate Allery (South Hadley, Mass.) placed second in the one-meter (226.55) and three-meter (411.70) diving events.
*The Minutewomen are 5-2 in dual-meet competition and return to the pool on Jan. 20, when they travel to Baltimore to take on the University of Maryland-Baltimore County and George Washington at 1:00 p.m.
MEN'S SWIMMING
*The men's swimming & diving team finished first out of four teams at the Rhode Island Invitational this weekend. UMass won three out of the four relay events and senior Chris Arsenault (Peabody, Mass.) won two events as the team earned 377 points to place ahead of Dartmouth (263), La Salle (223) and event host Rhode Island (219).
*The 400 medley relay team of sophomore Justin Houck (Wyomissing, Pa.), senior Mike Sabina (Avon, Mass.), Arsenault and sophomore Chad Arnold (Mohnton, Pa.) won the event with a time of 3:31.69, while the 200 free relay team of Sabina, sophomore Ryan Zaucha (Auburn, Calif.), Arnold and Arsenault placed first with a time of 1:26.99. The 200 medley relay team of Zaucha, Sabina, senior Joe Martin (Naugatuck, Conn.) and Arsenault gave UMass its third relay win with a time of 1:37.70.
*Arsenault won the 200 IM (1:55.57) and the 100 free (46.75), while Sabina won the 100 breast (1:01.04). UMass' other individual winners included Houck in the 100 back (54.70), Zaucha in the 200 back (1:59.16) and freshman Peter Tawczynski (Holden, Mass.) in the 200 breast (2:13.29).
*The Minutemen are 5-2 in dual-meet competition and return to the pool on Jan. 20, when they travel to Baltimore to take on the University of Maryland-Baltimore County and George Washington, at 1:00 p.m.
MEN'S GYMNASTICS
*Men's Gymnastics opened their season by defeating defending national champion Penn State, 205.00-202.150, on Saturday night.
*The Minutemen took the first five places on the pommel horse, led by sophomore Justin Hammar's (St. Paul, Minn.) 9.25. Classmate Brian Peterson (Albuquerque, N.M.) took second (9.10), followed by senior Andy Leis (Suffield, Conn.) (9.00). Leis also took second on the parallel bars (8.55) and the horizontal bar (8.65).
*Freshman Patrick McFarlin (Longmeadow, Mass.) placed second on the floor exercise (8.70) and third on the parallel bars (8.50), while Bryan McNulty (Springfield, Va.) took second on the vault with a 9.00.
*UMass returns to action this weekend, Jan. 19-20, when it participates in the West Point (N.Y.) Open. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
WOMEN'S GYMNASTICS
*Women's gymnastics opened their 2001 season with a third place finish in a quad meet held at Western Michigan. The Minutewomen garnered 189.600 team points, just ahead of Eastern Michigan (189.400). Western Michigan won the meet with a score of 193.100, followed by Illinois-Chicago who registered a 191.025.
*Sophomore Katie Teft (Grand Rapids, Mich.) placed first on the balance beam with a score of 9.85, while junior Tracy Chew (Silver Spring, Md.) took fifth in the all-around with a 37.90.
*Sophomore Jen Gendron (Shrewsbury, Mass.) made a solid debut on the floor exercise for the Minutewomen as she tied for fourth with a score of 9.70.
*UMass returns to action in the state of Michigan this Saturday, Jan. 20, as it visits Michigan State. The meet is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
