Head Football Coach Mark Whipple wasted no time in making his mark on the University of Massachusetts program, compiling a recruiting class based heavily on speed and big-play ability at the skill positions. Whipple announced the signing of 31 student-athletes for the 1998-99 academic year.

"We wanted speed first, then size and character, and we feel we accomplished just that," said Whipple. "We have attracted a quality class from all over the country, but we still landed some of the top talent in our home state."

Twenty (20) of the 31 individuals who signed letters of intent are skill position players, including eight wide receivers, four defensive backs, three quarterbacks, three running backs, one tight end and one quarterback/defensive back. The Minutemen also added four defensive linemen, three offensive linemen, three placekickers and one linebacker.
