Jesse Mayfield-Sheehan of the Daily Collegian checked in with UMass women's basketball head coach Sharon Dawley and junior guard Emily Mital ahead of the annual Field Trip Day game, hosted this year on Wednesday, Jan. 29 at 11:45 a.m. against George Washington.
"Morning games typically mean smaller crowds for most sporting events.
But when the Massachusetts women's basketball team hosts George Washington on Wednesday morning, it will be expecting a larger crowd than usual as hundreds of children from local elementary schools come out for the team's annual Field Trip Day game.
On Field Trip Day, students in kindergarten through eighth grade can come to the game for free, resulting in a big turnout from the local schools..."
Check out the rest of Mayfield-Sheehan's story through the Daily Collegian website. More information on the women's basketball program is available on UMassAthletics.com.

Jim Fenton of The Enterprise wrote a story covering Julie (Ready) Mulvey, who is one of six University of Massachusetts alums set to be inducted into the UMass Athletics Hall of Fame on Sunday. Ready competed for the UMass women's basketball team from 1978-81 and recorded all-America honors as she earned 1,406 career points for the Minutewomen.
"Massasoit Community College director of athletics Julie (Ready) Mulvey will receive a special honor this weekend.
Mulvey will be one of six people inducted into the University of Massachusetts-Amherst Athletics Hall of Fame on Sunday afternoon.
The Whitman-Hanson Regional High School graduate was one of the top women's basketball players at UMass, scoring 1,406 points from 1978-81, earning Division 1 All-America honors and being nominated twice for the national player of the year award..."
Read the conclusion of Fenton's article through paper's website here. More information on the Minutewomen is available on UMassAthletics.com.
Even including the home loss to American International Jan. 14, the Minutemen's strength of schedule is ranked fifth nationally of all 59 Division I teams. They trail only New Hampshire, with the strongest slate, followed by Minnesota, Notre Dame, and Minnesota-Duluth in the latest Ratings Percentage Index as posted by U.S. College Hockey Online.
Additionally, UMass has played 15 of its 24 games away from the Mullins Center. Its home mark is 3-5-1, but 3-9-1 on the road, and 0-1-1 on neutral ice (UConn Hockey Classic).
"We're never going to make excuses, but we're pretty battled- tested for this time of year," UMass coach John Micheletto said.

For the next five weeks, beginning Friday and going until the end of the regular season, the University of Massachusetts will play nine games, all against conference foes, to determine its position in March's Hockey East tournament.
It starts with this weekend's home-and-home series with Merrimack -- Friday at the Mullins Center, Saturday at Lawler Arena in North Andover. Both games are at 7 p.m.
"We've been stressing every time out, no matter who we play, at home or on the road, every league game matters," UMass coach John Micheletto said. "We've tried to create that sense of urgency without creating a sense of panic. The difference is there's nothing but league games mixed in the rest of the way. There's a sprint to the finish line mentality, but I don't know that we're looking at it as any more important or less important than we have with games in the past."

Geoff Shannon of InsideLacrosse.com took a look at the University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse team as part of its 2014 season preview on Thursday. Shannon recapped the team's 2013 finish, took a look at a few of the key returnees and newcomers for head coach Greg Cannella's 20th year as the program leader and picked out a few key contests on the schedule.

"Well, we've obviously had a few rough patches throughout the season. .?.?. Right now, we have all league games left, so that's what we're focusing on."

It was just an ordinary Friday night.
Conor Allen was sitting on the couch in his Hartford, Conn., home, playing cards with a group of friends, when he received a phone call from an unfamiliar number around 10:30 p.m.
He answered suspiciously. Initially, he thought it was a prank call because he didn't recognize the voice on the other end. That mystery voice actually belonged to Ken Gernander, Allen's coach for the AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack.
Gernander wasn't just looking to chat, however. He had with him the most exciting news of the 23-year-old's hockey career: Allen was being called up to the New York Rangers.
Next thing he knew, he was on a flight to Washington, D.C., where the Rangers played the Capitals that night, to meet his new teammates.
"It was a weird feeling knowing I was getting called up," Allen said. "You try not to think about it. Everyone just tells you to take care of business in the AHL and if you do that the NHL will figure itself out.

In computer science, there's a "five-minute rule" for deciding whether a data item should be kept in memory or stored on a disk.
If there was a five-minute rule to determine whether a player should become a distant memory, it would depend on how he handled hockey's version of the disk.
In his first unofficial game with the University of Massachusetts, Frankie Vatrano of East Longmeadow beat that clock by scoring at 4:01 of the first period Sunday to send the Minutemen off to a 5-2 exhibition win over the U.S. National Under-18 squad at the Mullins Center.
It was a day Frank Vatrano has looked forward to all season.
A redshirt freshman on the Massachusetts hockey team, Vatrano is ineligible to play in an official game until the 2014 Hockey East Tournament, but got his first taste of game action on Sunday when the Minutemen hosted the U.S. National Under-18 Team in an exhibition contest.
He made the most of it.
Vatrano scored a power-play goal and assist while playing on UMass' top forward line in a 5-2 win at Mullins Center.
It may have been an ordinary scrimmage for the rest of the Minutemen. But for Vatrano, it was relief. He's practiced with the Minutemen all season, but Sunday marked his first organized game since January 2013, meaning he could finally hit someone in another jersey.
"When you play against your teammates you don't wanna go so hard against them, you don't want to hurt them, but it was great," said Vatrano, who was a former player for the USA. "It felt like a college game to me because I remember when I was in their shoes playing against Michigan, Wisconsin, all those schools."

UMass improved to 12-1 on the season with a 73-65 win over Miami (Ohio) on Saturday. A number of players had strong performances - Chaz Williams looked to score more in the first half. Raphiael Putney regained some of his outside shooting touch. Trey Davis was a 50 percent shooter again. Maxie Esho did a little bit of everything from scoring to assists to defense. But now its onto to Atlantic 10 play - the second season. That begins Wednesday night against Saint Joseph's at 7 p.m.
