Harry Plumer of the Springfield Republican has a feature on Joe Colton being awarded a scholarship on Wednesday. Colton says that a major reason for his determined play this year was being doubted as a FBS player coming out of high school.

UMass pulled off its third dramatic win of the season Wednesday with a 64-63 win at Siena on a Chaz Williams layup with 3.3 seconds remaining. Williams, who scored his 1,000th career point in the game, finished with 23 and Terrell Vinson added 17 to key the comeback. The Minutemen trailed by as many as 17 points late in the first half. Its the third time since January that UMass has erased a 17-poiunt deficit and won a game - against Saint Joseph's at the Mullins Center, at Drexel in the NIT quarterfinals and Wednesday.
After a 10-day break, the UMass basketball team will return to action tonight at Siena. Here are some previews and sidebars to hold you over until 7 p.m. The game can be heard on the UMass Sports Network with Josh Maurer and Tim Kenney on the call.

UMass women's basketball kicked off the 2012-13 campaign with an 83-53 drubbing of Kent State at the Mullins Center on Saturday afternoon. The Minutewomen were paced by four players scoring in double-figures, including senior center Jasmine Watson's game-high 21. Watson used her final basket of the game to become the 18th Minutewoman to eclipse the 1,000-point mark in program history. Freshman Rashida Timbilla tallied a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards to help the winning effort, the only known Minutewoman to secure a double-double during her first contest as a true-freshman.

CBS Sports.com has been rolling out their conference basketball previews and today is the A-10s turn. Here's a few nuggets writer Jeff Goodman came up with in his talks with the coaches around the league.
The A-10 is loaded this year. It's so loaded, in fact, that Xavier could finish in the bottom half of the league. With the addition of Butler and VCU, it's a conference that could legitimately get a half-dozen teams into the NCAA tournament this season. Brad Stevens and Shaka Smart will be far more relevant throughout conference play nowadays -- and the A-10 tournament should get plenty of pub since it's in the brand-new Barclays Center in Brooklyn. This could be a banner season for the Atlantic 10 -- all the way around.
