UMass linebacker Tyler Holmes a strong candidate for Buchanan Award

Jeff Thomas of the Springfield Republican has a nice piece on Tyler Holmes and the Buck Buchanan Award which is given to the nation's best defensive player in FCS football.

UMass football has had many candidates for the big national awards sponsored by The Sports Network, but senior linebacker Tyler Holmes could be the first to bring one home.

Holmes is on the Buck Buchananwatch list as the best defensive player in the nation in Football Championship Subdivision, which was announced on Monday.

Since TSN started presenting these awards in 1987, no Minuteman has claimed a Buchanan or a Walter Payton for offense or the Eddie Robinson for coaching.

Thomas expects that to change with Holmes this season.
