Chuck ’72 And MaryAnn Sherwood Make $1 Million Gift To UMass Hockey Excellence Endowment
February 19, 2026 | Hockey, Athletics Department
AMHERST, Mass. – Massachusetts Athletics is thrilled to announce a $1 million gift from Chuck '72 MS, '77 Ph.D. and MaryAnn Sherwood to support the UMass Hockey Excellence Endowment.
The Sherwood's have a rich history of philanthropy at UMass, as the couple established the Sherwood-Delaney Scholarship with the purpose to encourage meritorious students to pursue careers in science to ensure America's continuing leadership in innovation and discovery. The former President, Chief Executive Officer and Board member at Anika Therapeutics, Inc. and founder of Sherwood Ventures, a consulting and investment-oriented LLC, Chuck also serves as Co-Chair of the UMass SCU Subcommittee for the Accelerate Campaign and as a College of Natural Sciences Advisory Board Member.
"What inspired us to make a generous gift in support of Massachusetts hockey is the character Coach Greg Carvel instills in his players," the Sherwoods shared. "He's developing more than great hockey players — he's shaping outstanding young men. The way these student-athletes represent UMass, both on and off the ice, reflects a philosophy we deeply respect and are proud to support."
"The Commonwealth's flagship campus is fortunate to have such tremendous philanthropic leaders in Chuck and MaryAnn Sherwood," said director of athletics Ryan Bamford. "Their remarkable investment in student success and furthering the reach of science has been profound; and now, adding to the endowment support for our proud hockey program will enhance the student-athlete experience in perpetuity. We are forever grateful for the Sherwood's generosity and belief in the power of athletics as a co-curricular endeavor at UMass."
The Sherwood's' generosity is rooted in a lifelong connection to hockey and to UMass athletics. Their son, Chip, played the sport throughout his youth, while MaryAnn's ties to UMass Athletics run deep — UMass games were a central part of her upbringing, as her father served as an assistant football coach under legendary head coach Vic Fusia.
"We are extremely thankful to Chuck and MaryAnn for their remarkable support of our program," said UMass hockey head coach Greg Carvel. "Their commitment to our endowment will strengthen the resources available to our student-athletes, both academically and competitively. Chuck and MaryAnn's continued support of the University reflects a deep belief in the impact of UMass athletics. Their investment will play an important role in shaping the future of UMass Hockey and we are truly grateful for their support."
The UMass Hockey Excellence Endowment
The UMass Hockey Excellence Endowment was established to provide long-term financial stability and resources for the program, helping to ensure continued competitive excellence moving forward. The endowment assists with scholarships, coaching resources, equipment, training facility enhancements and overall program development.
This endowment, made possible by the support of our alumni and community, helps sustain and enhance the success of the hockey program.
The UMass Hockey Excellence Endowment supports various aspects of the hockey program that are essential for continued athletic and academic success. This contribution is part of a broader effort to strengthen and sustain the long-term financial health of the program.
