Massachusetts Men's Lacrosse Falls In Opener At #12 Army, 14-8

January 31, 2026 | Men's Lacrosse

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Sophomore Jack Turowsky had a career day with six points, but a late first half run and a four-goal fourth quarter helped No. 12 Army West Point top Massachusetts men's lacrosse, 14-8 on Saturday at Foley Athletic Center. The Gorillas open the season at 0-1, while the Black Knights begin at 1-0.

Turowsky led UMass with five goals and an assist, while senior Aiden Drunsic, junior Matthew Cargiulo and freshman Thomas Bagnall contributed the other three tallies for the Maroon & White. Senior Zach Auble grabbed four ground balls and junior Jimmy Elliott had two caused turnovers.

For Army, Hill Plunkett logged a game-high seven points on five goals and two assists. Guss Bell and Brayden Fountain followed with three points apiece (2g, 1a) and Robert Simone collected nine ground balls.

In a defensive-minded first quarter, Plunkett connected for the first goal of the contest at the 12:07 mark before being countered by Turowsky with eight to play in the frame. Mike Harney then put the Black Knights back in front, 2-1, in the final minute of the opening period.

Fountain and Plunkett scored for Army with a goal from Drunsic sandwiched between in the opening five minutes of the second quarter to give the Black Knights a two-goal cushion. Then two straight from Turowsky, including a behind the back highlight reel score, leveled things at 4-4.

The teams traded goals before Army closed the half with a three-goal run in the final 72 seconds to hold an 8-5 advantage at the break.

UMass began the second with a man-up tally from Bagnall for the first goal of his collegiate career at the 14:47 mark, but the Black Knights managed the next two of the contest to stretch their lead to 10-6. Turowsky then capped the third quarter with another man-up goal at 2:29 to bring the Gorillas back to within three.

Army pulled away in the fourth, outscoring UMass 4-1 over the final 15 minutes of the contest, with the lone goal for the Maroon & White coming at 3:02 with Cargiulo's first of the season.

The Black Knights out-shot the Gorillas, 51-24 and grabbed 28 ground balls to UMass' 14. On special teams, the Gorillas went 2-for-5 in man-up and successfully killed all four man-down situations they faced.

Sophomore goalkeeper Owen Salanger totaled 15 saves on the day for UMass and Sean Byrne stopped 11 in the cage for Army.

The Gorillas will return to action next Saturday, February 7, when the squad will play host to Merrimack for its home opener on Garber Field at 3 p.m.
