Women’s Soccer Falls To Ball State, 1-0, In Conference Opener

The Minutewomen celebrated five seniors for Senior Day prior to kick off.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's soccer opened Mid-American Conference play with a 1-0 loss to Ball State on Sunday afternoon at Rudd Field on Senior Day.
The Minutewomen move to 2-3-2 overall, including 0-1 in conference, while the Cardinals improve to 4-2-1 overall and 1-0 in the MAC.
Ball State scored early in the first half with a goal at the 2:05 mark. Addie Chester crossed the ball to Lexi Watkins, who gave the Cardinals a 1-0 advantage.
In the second half, the Minutewomen and the Cardinals had a few scoring opportunities, but defensively, both teams stood strong. Ball State was able to maintain its lead to come away with the win.
Ball State took 15 shots in the match, while Massachusetts tallied nine, as the Cardinals placed five shots on goal with Minutewomen totaling two on net. Ball State had the slight advantage in corners over UMass, 3-2.
Caroline Dickson led the team in shots with three, placing one on goal. Morgan Bellamy had two shots, while four other Minutewomen registered one shot apiece.
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Leah Nisenfeld played the full 90 minutes, saving four shots and allowing one goal. Abby Jenkins of Ball State made two saves and did not let in a goal.
Massachusetts plays its first road MACtion game on Thursday, September 18, against Akron. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m. in Akron, Ohio.
