Massachusetts Secures Second Straight Shutout, Defeats UMass Lowell 3-0

LOWELL, Mass. -- No. 14 Massachusetts (2-0) secured its second shutout in as many games, earning a 3-0 win over UMass Lowell (1-1) for the Kennedy Cup on Sunday at Wicked Field.   
  
The win marks the 99th of the Barb Weinberg era and the 11th victory over the River Hawks in the all-time series. The Minutewomen allowed nine shots on the day and just two in the entire second half of play. 
   
Emily Barrett got her freshman season off to a strong start, scoring two goals in just her second collegiate game. The Sevenoaks, England native tallied her two goals on three shots, all on goal.  
 
Fellow freshman Sophie Kent also notched her first career goal, punctuating a pass from Alexa Collins past the Red Hawks keeper early in the fourth quarter.  
 
Senior goalkeeper Myrte van Herwijnen showed her class, stopping three shots including a pair of kick saves to keep UMass Lowell off the scoreboard in the first quarter. 
   
UMass Lowell was led by goalkeeper Veerle Mous who recorded 11 saves on the day. 
  
Breaking Down The Action 
  • The Minutewomen ended the first quarter with the score 0-0, thanks in part to a pair of kick saves from Myrte van Herwijnen. 
  • Massachusetts increased the offensive pressure in the second quarter holding a 6-1 advantage in shots but could not tally the game's opening goal before the break. 
  • Emily Barrett wasted no time, scoring her first career goal 1:52 into the third quarter to give Massachusetts a 1-0 lead. 
  • Sophie Kent followed with her first career goal, generating a 2-0 Minutewomen lead with 12:20 remaining in the fourth quarter. 
  • Barrett secured her first brace as a Minutewomen, firing in a penalty stroke to provide Massachusetts with a 3-0 lead late in the final period. 
  • Massachusetts earned back-to-back shutout wins, the final whistle sounding with the score 3-0.
