Hughes and Danahy earn UMass Student-Athletes of the Week

Alec Hughes of men’s soccer, and Claire Danahy of women’s field hockey will be recognized on Wednesday at the UMass Sports Luncheon.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts men's soccer graduate student Alec Hughes and women's field hockey graduate Claire Danahy earned the UMassFive Student-Athletes of the Week honor, as announced on Wednesday. The trio will be recognized at the UMass Sports Luncheon this Wednesday, September 18, at 1 p.m. in the Berkshire Room at the Berkshire Dining Commons.
Speakers at this week's luncheon will be Head Football Coach Don Brown and Head Field Hockey Coach Barb Weinberg.Â
Hughes scored a hat trick for the Minutemen in their 7-1 win against UMass Lowell in the Kennedy Cup and scored the winning goal against Brown to extend their win streak to three games and finish off the week 2-0-0. The reigning A-10 Offensive Player of the Year continued to climb the Massachusetts history books this week, as his four goals lifted him to second All-Time among the top goal scorers for the Minutemen with 42 on his career. He now trails only Jeff Deren ('03) by 6 goals.
The Minutewomen are 2-0 on the week beating divisional rivals Boston University and UMass Lowell, claiming the Kennedy Cup in a thrilling overtime win on Sunday at Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex. Danahy totaled three goals and an assist this week, including the game winner in their historic come-from-behind 4-3 victory. She netted a goal and an assist on her birthday, beating The Terriers 5-3 on the road in Boston. Danahy came in clutch, starting the Minutewomen's comeback with her second quarter goal and the game winner giving Massachusetts the Kennedy Cup for the 10th time in program history.Â
