Massachusetts Falls To Preseason No. 1 Northwestern

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Massachusetts (0-2) dropped a 6-1 decision to preseason no. 1 Northwestern (2-0) at Lakeside Field. The Minutewomen managed six shots and four penalty corners but fell to the 2023 National Runner-Up on opening weekend. 
 
Junior Myrte van Herwijnen totaled six saves, a season-high on the young 2024 campaign. Fellow junior Gabrielle Benkenstein secured Massachusetts lone goal of the afternoon, her fifth in the maroon and white. Both Claire Danahy and Dempsey Campbell assisted on the goal, converting one of four Minutewomen penalty corners. 
 
Danahy led Massachusetts in shots, totaling two scoring attempts on the afternoon. Five different Minutewomen recorded a shot in the matchup, four of those were on goal.

  • Northwestern secured a 1-0 lead with 8:25 remaining in the first quarter as Wildcat forward Olivia Bent-Cole scored her third goal of the season.
