June 24, 2024 | Hockey
SUNRISE, Fla. – Former University of Massachusetts hockey defenseman Brandon Montour (2014-15) has won the Stanley Cup with the Florida Panthers as Florida took the deciding Game 7 of the series, 2-1, over the Edmonton Oilers at Amerant Bank Arena on Monday night.
It marks the seventh time a Massachusetts hockey alumnus has won the Stanley Cup and third consecutive year after Cale Makar (2017-19) hoisted the Cup with the Colorado Avalanche in 2022 and Jonathan Quick (2005-07) won his third Cup with the Vegas Golden Knights in 2023. Quick was previously a Stanley Cup Champion in 2012 and 2014 with the Los Angeles Kings. Conor Sheary (2010-14) won two Stanley Cups during his time with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2016 and 2017.
Montour, the fourth-highest draft pick in UMass history, was selected by Anaheim in the second round of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft (55th overall) and came to Florida via trade from the Buffalo Sabres in April 2021. He has played 520 regular season games through his eight-year NHL career, totaling 252 points on 66 goals and 186 assists with a +40 rating. Coming back from off-season shoulder surgery in 2023-24, he had 33 points (8g, 25a) for the Panthers in 66 regular season contests.
During Florida's Stanley Cup run, Montour appeared in all 24 playoff games and contributed 11 points on three goals and eight assists.
Montour joined the Minutemen at the conclusion of the 2014 fall semester and saw action in 21 games in 2014-15, totaling 20 points on three goals and 17 assists, including six multi-point efforts and a .95 point per-game average. He logged a career-high three assists in UMass' five overtime victory over Notre Dame in the Hockey East Tournament, the longest game in NCAA history. In Hockey East play Montour appeared in 12 games and had 12 points on two goals and 10 assists, helping him earn Hockey East All-Rookie Team recognition.
