#13 UMass Advances To A-10 Second Round With 54-49 Win Over #12 La Salle

Tori Hyduke led four Minutewomen in double figures with 14 points while Stefanie Kulesza added a double-double.
HENRICO, Va. – The University of Massachusetts women's basketball team advanced to the second round of the Atlantic 10 Championship with a 54-49 win over La Salle on Wednesday at the Henrico Sports & Events Center. The Minutewomen were led offensively by Tori Hyduke's season-high 14 points while Stefanie Kulesza finished with a double-double on 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
Chinenye Odenigbo joined three other Minutewomen in double figures with a career-high 13 points to go along with seven rebounds while Alexsia Rose chipped in 10 points and five rebounds.
The Minutewomen opened the afternoon with a 5-0 scoring run before going ahead 11-5 with 3:46 to go in the opening quarter on an Odenigbo layup as part of her six early points. Kulesza made it a seven-point game at 14-7 with a 3-pointer as the Minutewomen took the lead into the first break. UMass held La Salle to 21-percent from the field in the first.
Both teams opened the second quarter cold from the field before UMass took a 20-11 lead on a Rose layup with 4:07 to go in the half. La Salle followed by knocking down two consecutive triples as part of a 9-0 run that saw the Explorers tie things up with 1:10 to go in the second. Bre Bellamy ended the run in the final seconds of the half to give UMass a 22-20 lead.
UMass held La Salle without a field goal from the 5:55 mark of the third to the 8:27 mark of the fourth quarter after the Explorers built a 29-25 lead on 3-of-5 from deep to open the half. The Minutewomen regained the lead with a 6-0 run and led 35-32 heading into the final frame.
A 4-0 run for the Minutewomen early in the fourth forced a La Salle timeout as UMass led 39-32. Bellamy converted on a triple with 4:37 to go to push UMass' lead to nine at 49-40, tying the largest lead of the game. The Minutewomen committed four turnovers as the Explorers pulled back within three at 49-46 before Hyduke iced the game by going 4-of-4 from the line. Hyduke scored 10 of her 14 points in the fourth quarter and went 3-of-4 in the final 10 minutes of action.
The Minutewomen advance to the A-10 Championship second round to take on no. 5-seed Duquesne on Thursday with a 1:30 p.m. tip on ESPN+.
