Massachusetts Women’s Basketball Falls To Rhode Island, 86-64

AMHERST, Mass.– University of Massachusetts women's basketball fell, 86-64, to the University of Rhode Island on Wednesday evening at the Mullins Center.
Kristin Williams led the team with 15 points, going six-for-10 from the field, including three-of-four from beyond the arc. Alexsia Rose followed close behind with 13 points and added eight assists on the night. Chinenye Odenigbo recorded a career-high 10 points, while Stefanie Kulesza had nine points. Kulesza and Bre Bellamy registered a team-best four rebounds each.
Rhode Island began with a 5-0 run, before Rose made back-to-back jumpers to bring Massachusetts back within one at 5-4. Another bucket from the Rams put them ahead by three heading into the first media timeout of the evening. Bellamy knocked down a shot from beyond the arc to tie the game up at seven apiece. URI answered back with two three-pointers of their own, but Rose closed the gap to one with back-to-back buckets to score her eighth point of the first quarter. With 37 seconds, Rhode Island made a jumper on the fast break to lead 15-11.
In the second quarter, Bellamy hit her second three of the night to make it a one possession game at 22-19 with URI leading. The Rams started a 15-6 run to push ahead 37-25 at the two-minute mark. A layup by Rhode Island capped the second, with URI ahead 39-25.
URI continued to pull ahead, finishing the third quarter with a 66-42 lead. Williams put up 13 points in the fourth frame to lead the Minutewomen, but fell to Rhode Island, 86-64.
UMass plays two of its final four games in the Mullins Center, including a matchup with VCU on Saturday at 1 p.m. for Senior Day. The Minutewomen conclude the regular season at home on Wednesday, Feb. 28 with a 6 p.m. tip against St. Bonaventure.
