Four Minutewomen Receive Recognition As Part of 2024 ECAC Awards

DANBURY, Conn. -- Massachusetts field hockey continued to rack up postseason honors as four Minutewomen received recognition as part of the 2024 Division I Field Hockey ECAC Awards, The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) announced on Monday. Head Coach Barb Weinberg and goalkeeper Myrte van Herwijnen each received major awards collecting Coach and Defensive Player of The Year honors respectively.
Barb Weinberg received ECAC Coach of The Year honors after a 2024 campaign which saw her lead the Minutewomen to a 17-6 record and the program's first NCAA Final Four appearance since 1992. The Atlantic 10 Coach of The Year, Weinberg's squad claimed the A-10 Regular Season Championship with an undefeated 7-0 record in conference play. The Minutewomen earned the program's 27th overall NCAA Tournament bid, marking the first appearance of Weinberg's tenure and Massachusetts' first since 2016.
Myrte van Herwijnen claimed ECAC Defensive Player of Year and First Team honors after a 2024 season which resulted in NFHCA Northeast First Team All-Region selection. The Atlantic 10 Goalkeeper of The Year and First Team Selection led the conference while ranking fifth nationally with a .798 save percentage. A consistent performer, Van Herwijnen earned three straight Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Week honors as well as NFHCA Division 1 National Defensive Player of the Week selection over the course of the season. The Huizen, The Netherlands native ranked 10th nationally while sitting second in the A-10 with a 1.05 goals against average. Van Herwijnen concluded the 2024 season with a stellar 11 saves across three NCAA Tournament games, including six against Northwestern in the Final Four.
Fellow NFHCA Northeast First Team All-Region selection, Claire Danahy earned All-ECAC First Team selection after leading Massachusetts while ranking fifth in the A-10 with 29 points. An All-Atlantic 10 First Team and NCAA All-Tournament Team recipient, Danahy led the A-10 and ranked seventh nationally with 13 assists. Danahy served as a key offensive catalyst scoring five game-winning goals on the year, including the game sealing tally against Harvard to secure Massachusetts' first final four berth since 1992.
Elena Clococeanu completed the trio of All-ECAC honors for the Minutewomen, receiving second team selection after a standout season in the maroon and white. The NFHCA Northeast Second Team All-Region selection served as a main central defender for a Massachusetts' unit which ranks no. 7 nationally and no. 1 in the A-10 with a 1.06 goals against average. An All-Atlantic 10 First Team and NCAA All-Tournament Team selection, Clococeanu helped lead a Minutewomen defensive third which ranked tied for fourth nationally and no.1 in the A-10 with 10 shutouts on the season.
