Carew, Curry And Hughes Collect UMass Student-Athlete Of The Week Recognition

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts cross country graduate student Bobby Carew, women's soccer graduate student midfielder Ella Curry and men's soccer graduate student forward Alec Hughes have been named UMass Student-Athletes of the Week, it was announced on Monday. The trio will be honored at the UMass Sports Luncheon this Wednesday, November 6, at 12 p.m. at the Berkshire Dining Common.
Guest speakers at this week's luncheon will be men's basketball head coach Frank Martin and football head coach Don Brown.
Carew helped men's cross country to its third Atlantic 10 Championship and first since 2008 finishing as the No. 1 runner for UMass second overall, clocking in at 23:44.4 in the 8K in a field of 142 competitors. Carew was one of five Minutemen to earn All-Conference recognition at the meet.
As No.3-seeded women's soccer defeated No. 6 Loyola Chicago in the Atlantic 10 Quarterfinals, 1-0, Curry notched the lone goal for UMass to advance to the semifinals. Curry scored an olimpico goal off the corner kick early in the first half, her second olimpico goal of the year.
Hughes scored two goals in men's soccer's 5-1 win at St. Bonaventure in the regular season finale and broke the program record for career goals scored, previously held by 2024 UMass Hall of Fame inductee Jeff Deren who scored 48 goals in his career from 1999 to 2002. The Glastonbury, Connecticut native has helped the Minutemen secure the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Atlantic 10 Tournament.
