Quigg, van Herwijnen Named UMass Student-Athletes Of The Week

Sammy Quigg of men’s swim and dive and Myrte van Herwijnen of field hockey will be recognized on Wednesday at the UMass Sports Luncheon.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts men's swim and dive junior Sammy Quigg and field hockey junior Myrte van Herwijnen tabbed the UMassFive Student-Athletes of the Week honor, as announced on Tuesday. The duo will be recognized at the UMass Sports Luncheon this Wednesday, October 9, at 1 p.m. in the Berkshire Room at the Berkshire Dining Commons.
Speakers at this week's luncheon will be football head coach Don Brown and Assistant Athletic Director for Sport Administration Erica Lemm. Cost to attend is $16.25 ($14.63 for UMass Alumni).
Quigg broke a pool record in the Minutemen's first meet of the season against Boston College. Quigg swam a new record time of 20.34 at the Joseph R. Rogers, Jr., Pool, in the 50 freestyle to claim the gold medal, before placing first in the 100 freestyle with a time of 45.24. During the relay events, Quigg anchored the 200 medley relay team to a first-place finish with a combined time of 1:33.34. The junior anchored the 200 freestyle relay team that grabbed the silver with a time of 1:24.51.
Junior Myrte van Herwijnen enjoyed a tremendous week in net, recording 13 total saves across two victories including the Minutewomen's 1-0 shutout win over No. 11 Boston College. The Massachusetts netminder was key in the ranked win, making 10 saves to cement her fourth shutout of the season. Van Herwijnen made numerous saves in high leverage situations, including seven on defensive penalty corners. Overall, the Huizen, Netherlands native led a Massachusetts defensive penalty corner unit which held Boston College scoreless on 10 attempts, including four in the fourth quarter of play.
