Women’s Basketball Defeated By Davidson On The Road

DAVIDSON, N.C.– University of Massachusetts women's basketball fell to Davidson College, 72-42, on Wednesday night at John M. Belk Arena.
Kristin Williams recorded a team-leading 13 points, adding two rebounds and a steal. Williams went 3-for-6 from beyond the arc, and 2-for-2 from the free throw line. Chinenye Odenigbo followed with a career-high nine points, while coming down with a team-best six boards and dishing out a dime.
The game started off slow for both teams, as Davidson scored the first two points of the game at the 8:22 mark. Lilly Taulelei put the Minutewomen on the board, but the Wildcats began a 15-6 run to close out the first quarter with a 17-8 lead.
Davidson continued its run, going 19-6, to lead 21-8. Kristin Williams gave Massachusetts nine straight points with back-to-back-to-back triples to get UMass within four points, as the Wildcats led 21-17. A small 7-3 run pushed Davidson ahead 28-20, before a layup from Mikenzie Jones and a jumper from Alexsia Rose made it a four-point contest at 28-24. Another small run for the Wildcats saw seven points to the Minutewomen's two, ended the half with a score of 35-26, as Davidson led by nine.
Taulelei made back-to-back baskets to close the gap to five, with Davidson ahead 35-30. A three-pointer and two good free throws extended the Wildcats lead by 10 at the 7:22 mark of the third quarter, before heading on a 7-0 run to make it a 49-32 lead, the largest of the contest. Davidson continued a 6-2 run that elapsed two minutes and 42 seconds to finish 55-34.
The Wildcats continued to extend their lead in the final frame, putting up 17 points, while UMass scored eight, bringing the game to its final score of 72-42.
UMass wraps up its two-game road trip at rival Rhode Island on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Minutewomen return to the Mullins Center for Field Trip Day on Wednesday, Jan. 31 against La Salle at 11 a.m. before wrapping the week at Saint Joseph's on Saturday, Feb. 3 at 2 p.m.
