Minutewomen Open A-10 Play With 3-1 Victory Over Saint Louis

September 15, 2023 | Field Hockey

AMHERST, Mass. -- Massachusetts (5-2, 1-0) found their offensive rhythm against Saint Louis (1-5, 0-1) earning a 3-1 win on Friday afternoon in Maryland Heights, Missouri. The UMass A-10 opener was full of offense, as three different Minutewomen found the net to help UMass earn their fifth victory of the season.

Massachusetts put the offensive pressure on early, recording 4 shots in the first quarter. Sophomore Mali Herberhold punctuated the first period of play, scoring her second goal in two games to give the Minutewomen the early lead.

The Minutewomen would continue to pepper the Billiken goal in the second period, drawing three penalty corners and recording three shots. Despite the offensive opportunities, the Saint Louis defense kept the deficit at one goal heading into the halftime break.

The third quarter was all Minutewomen as Junior Dempsey Campbell and Graduate Student Steph Gottwals each found the back of the net. Campbell led all players with 5 shots in the game.

The Billikens managed to get on the board early in the fourth quarter after an Emilie Keij green card gave Saint Louis the numbers advantage. Defensively the Minutewomen held strong mainting the two-goal lead and allowing just three shots on goal over 60 minutes of action.
