Hughes, Phommachanh Named UMass Student-Athletes Of The Week

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts student-athletes Alec Hughes of men's soccer and Taisun Phommachanh of football were named the UMass Student-Athletes of the Week, presented by UMassFive on Tuesday. The duo will be recognized at the UMass Sports Luncheon on Wednesday at the Berkshire Dining Commons.
Hughes put home a pair of goals as the Minutemen recorded a 2-2 draw in the regular season opener against Northeastern at Rudd Field on Thursday. The senior forward broke through for the game's first goal in the 25th-minute and helped gain back the lead for the Minutemen with a goal in the 54th-minute to make it a 2-1 game. Hughes was named to the United Soccer Coaches Forwards to Watch List last week and is five goals away from moving into the top-10 all-time in career goals at UMass.
Phommachanh threw for 192 yards on 10-for-17 passing, while rushing for a team-high 96 yards on 17 carries with a touchdown to lead the Minutemen to a season-opening 41-30 victory on Saturday night at New Mexico State.
